The Carceral State, Forensic Psychology, and Black Resistance: "Let Them Not Be Forgotten". 244 pp. 2025:8 (Springer, GW) <749-607>
ISBN 978-3-031-90278-9 hard ¥37,660.- (税込) EUR 159.99
This volume outlines the theoretical and ethical commitments for forensic psychologists in the struggle for Black liberation and details areas of focus for practice and research. It aims to highlight how Black forensic psychologists have historically engaged in these areas through the lens of Black psychology. The chapters that follow extensively cover the often overlooked relationship between forensic psychology and Black liberation, including chapters on: * Black forensic psychologists whose work contributed to political movements; * The psychologist's role in supporting reparations movements; * The importance of community healing collectives as alternatives to incarceration and policing; * Recommendations for introducing Black psychology into forensic practice. Examining the role of forensic psychology within America's racialized carceral systems, this book critically analyzes how psychological research and practice influence legal and material outcomes for Black individuals. Grounded in historical context and contemporary case studies, it offers essential insights for practitioners, activists, and scholars committed to challenging the systemic harms that disproportionately affect Black communities within the most incarcerated nation in the world.

Theodor Lipps: Philosopher, Psychologist, Aesthetician, and Language Theorist. 626 pp. 2025:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <749-27>
ISBN 978-3-031-87456-7 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book is the first comprehensive monograph devoted to the work of Theodor Lipps (1851-1914), a major figure in German intellectual life of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, who is today mostly remembered as a pioneering theorist of empathy and a key figure in the history of aesthetics. Although Lipps's thought has gained in recognition in recent years and his ideas resonate with many fields of current research, to date no systematic analysis of his work has appeared. The present monograph aims to fill this historiographical gap by revisiting the key aspects of his oeuvre, namely, his contribution to psychology, the theory of empathy, epistemology and logic, the theory of science, metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, and the theory of language. Based on a careful analysis of Lipps's writings, it pays special attention to how, in each of these eight domains, his ideas evolved from the late 1870s to the early 1910s, while placing them in their intellectual context and addressing the question of their reception and critical fortune. The book also discusses the significance and topicality of Lippsian thought in light of recent advances in philosophy and science, especially in affective science, social cognition, and aesthetics.

After the research psychologist Barbara Blatchley's husband and partner of thirty-six years passed away, her life changed utterly. Seeking to understand the pain and confusion she felt, Blatchley began exploring the psychology and neuroscience of bereavement. Why does grief last so long and hurt so much? How do we come to terms with loss?In Sorrow's Long Road, Blatchley interweaves an engaging and reader-friendly look at the research on grief with her powerful personal narrative. Beginning with the day of her husband's death, she traces the questions that loss raised and the answers that science provides. Blatchley examines the psychology of love and attachment, detailing how we bond with others and what happens when those bonds are broken. She considers the storm of emotions that the bereaved experience, as well as both the physical and psychological effects of grieving. Blatchley maps out how we adapt to the changes that loss brings and find a new identity afterward. In addition to her own experiences, she shares the stories of other people who have suffered a loss and struggled to recover, illustrating how grief changes over time.Accessibly written and deeply empathetic, Sorrow's Long Road humanizes the science, showing how psychology and neuroscience can help us make sense of the darkest times in our lives.

Autobiographical Memory and the Life Story: New Perspectives on Narrative Identity. 400 pp. 2025:11 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <749-1375>
ISBN 978-1-009-49212-6 hard ¥29,683.- (税込) GB£ 105.00
Answering the question of 'How have you become the person you are today?' encourages people to build their narrative identity, referring to their ever-changing, internalized life story. Life stories are grounded in autobiographical memory and provide the basis for the experience of personhood; that is, the experience of being an individual with a past, present, and future in a certain culture at a certain time. Traditionally, researchers have approached the study of life story psychology either by focusing on autobiographical memories or through narratives of individual memories, life story chapters, or entire life narratives. This book is the first to bring these isolated approaches together to reveal new perspectives on how people construct their identities and understand their lives across time and cultural contexts. Featuring chapters by leading experts, it offers a thorough introduction to both approaches that enriches our understanding of life story psychology.

Studying Leadership from a Microgenetic Perspective: Towards a Cultural-Psychological Theory of Leadership. (Methodologies in Developmental Sciences) 252 pp. 2025:5 (Springer, GW) <749-1379>
ISBN 978-3-031-90213-0 hard ¥35,306.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book presents a new theoretical and methodological framework to study leadership from a cultural-psychological and developmental perspective. This framework includes a new theory - called Small Act Psychology - and a new methodology to analyze leader-follower interactions in irreversible time. This perspective is inspired by current microgenetic (aktualgenese) developmental research within the wider domain of Cultural Psychology. Drawing on Kurt Lewin's field-theory, E.E. Boesch's Symbolic Action Theory and L.S. Vygotsky's semiotic theory, the present work defines leadership socially, and hence from a qualitative perspective, contributing to the development of a cultural-psychological theory of leadership. This new approach seeks to break with the current prevailing paradigm of the leadership research centered round the big-hero myth and interpreting leadership as a personal quality of a given person. It also aims to feel a gap within the general literature about qualitative leadership by proposing an encompassing and wholistic theory and methodology to make sense of leader-follower interactions from a developmental perspective. After presenting this new theory and methodology, the book also presents the results of empirical ethnographic and autoethnographic studies in which the new framework was applied. These studies provide not only empirical proof how leadership can be understood from a field-theoretical perspective but also show how leadership trajectories can change depending on specific interventions, providing evidence to the developmental nature of leadership as a social phenomenon. Studying Leadership from a Microgenetic Perspective: Towards a Cultural-Psychological Theory of Leadership will be of interest to organizational and educational researchers, as well as qualitative psychologists in any domain of psychology striving for a theory that makes sense of leadership dynamically, and developmental psychologists interested in seeing how developmental approaches can be adopted in the study of a wide range of social phenomena.

Violence Against Children: Contributions of the Bioecological Theory of Human Development to Research and Intervention. 246 pp. 2025:8 (Springer, GW) <749-1381>
ISBN 978-3-031-91785-1 hard ¥37,660.- (税込) EUR 159.99
This book shows how the Bioecological Theory of Human Development (BTHD) can be applied to the study of violence against children. Originally developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner to understand human development in general, BTHD offers a powerful framework to carry out a systemic analysis of the multiple levels of risk and protective factors associated with violence against children and provides the tools to develop interventions that go beyond the focus on the individual, addressing wider contextual factors. The chapters of this book present various typologies of violence that can manifest in family, school, community, institutional, and structural contexts, viewed through the lens of the Bioecological Theory of Human Development. The key concepts of Person, Process, Context, and Time serve as the foundation for a critical analysis of the factors that render children vulnerable to experiences of violence. The chapters also aim to showcase research and interventions developed by psychologists who have dedicated their work to studying violence against children in a variety of different contexts. Violence Against Children: Contributions of the Bioecological Theory of Human Development to Research and Intervention will be of interest to researchers in fields such as developmental psychology, education and social work who are interested in understanding violence from a systemic theoretical perspective, culturally situated within various realities. It will also be a useful resource for professionals working with children victim of violence, such as social workers, teachers and mental health practitioners, empowering them to engage in ethically and politically committed actions that drive the necessary social transformations for effectively combating violence against children worldwide, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, social class, religion, or citizenship status. The original manuscript of this book was written in Portuguese and translated into English with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

From Metaphysics to Culture: Music as a Factor in the Emergence of Modern Psychology, 1750-1900. (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences) 209 pp. 2025:4 (Springer, GW) <749-1382>
ISBN 978-3-031-89594-4 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book is a follow-up to the book Tracing the Emergence of Psychology, 1520-1750: A Sophisticated Intruder to Philosophy (Springer 2020). In contrast, this new book covers the period 1750-1900. Whereas the previous book focused on how psychology intervened in philosophy and theology, the perspective now is how philosophy and psychology tried to free themselves from each other. Kant's critical project formed an important start on this. Nevertheless, this was a struggle during the whole period, with a culmination at the end of the 19th century. When experimental psychology was established in Leipzig, psychology became regarded as an independent science. Another aspect of this new project is to pursue how experimental psychology ended up with music and culture as important factors. These are highly related to the role of sensation in psychology, which influenced how Baumgarten turned the psychological project into aesthetics in 1750. Thus, psychology in dialogue with music and aesthetics forms the red thread in this book. This book targets all interested in the history of psychology.

Distributed Free Improvisation: A Cultural Affective-Semiotic Perspective on Creativity. (Palgrave Studies in Creativity and Culture) 169 pp. 2025:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <749-1384>
ISBN 978-3-031-87864-0 hard ¥9,412.- (税込) EUR 39.99
This book presents a new model to visualize and understand the creative process in free improvisation: the Interactive Dimensions of the Creative Flow (IDCF). Drawing on theoretical work on distributed creativity and the author's background as a professional pianist, this short monograph establishes provocative dialogues between the field of music and the cultural psychology of semiotic dynamics to investigate human interactions involved in the act of creating. New empirical data and literature research on improvisation are used to discuss the historical and sociocultural factors behind collective and collaborative processes. In this context, the Distributed Free Improvisation Model offers a new theoretical and methodological innovation to the study of musical improvisation, which is presented as the result of a musical practice that develops in a community, in sociocultural contexts, through multiple interactions from which the senses and meanings of what is produced emerge. An inspiring read for students, professionals, and researchers in the field of cultural psychology, music improvisation, and creativity studies, this book opens new pathways to the study of creative processes and affective semiosis.

The Global Solution to AI: Risks, Rhetoric, Ideology, and Psychoanalysis. 126 pp. 2025:5 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <749-1386>
ISBN 978-3-031-90785-2 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book interrogates the notion that artificial intelligence may represent a threat to the world because it lacks both empathy and reason and suggests that - if we do not intervene to limit and control AI - we are at risk of being overtaken by machines, which are not aligned with human ethics and values. To outline how we should counter the worst tendencies of automated intelligence, we must first understand the roots of morality and reason and why we have been misunderstanding the fundamental difference between humans and computers. Moreover, by critiquing the rhetoric and ideology of AI proponents, we can gain a clear understanding of the need to regulate our machines on a global basis through global treaties. Turning to Freud's theories of empathy and reason from his Project for a Scientific Psychology, this book outlines why the human mind is different from AI, and why this difference is important to recognize.

Diffusion Process Models of Decision Making. Volume 1: Fundamental Processes. 554 pp. 2025:11 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <749-1388>
ISBN 978-1-009-65268-1 hard ¥39,578.- (税込) GB£ 140.00

Diffusion decision models are widely used to characterize the cognitive and neural processes involved in making rapid decisions about objects and events in the environment. These decisions, which are made hundreds of times a day without prolonged deliberation, include recognition of people and things as well as real-time decisions made while walking or driving. Diffusion models assume that the processes involved in making such decisions are noisy and variable and that noisy evidence is accumulated until there is enough for a decision. This volume provides the first comprehensive treatment of the theory, mathematical foundations, numerical methods, and empirical applications of diffusion process models in psychology and neuroscience. In addition to the standard Wiener diffusion model, readers will find a detailed, unified treatment of the cognitive theory and the neural foundations of a variety of dynamic diffusion process models of two-choice, multiple choice, and continuous outcome decisions.

Psychosocial Approaches to Health and Wellbeing in Adulthood. 303 pp. 2025:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <749-1392>
ISBN 978-3-031-88176-3 hard ¥23,536.- (税込) EUR 99.99
This textbook provides an up-to-date guide to theories within psychology and sociology relevant to understanding the major life transitions within adulthood and older age and demonstrates how they can be applied in practice. In doing so, it offers a psychosocial approach that will equip readers to meet the combined physical, psychological and social needs of those in their care. In this book the impact of biological factors on adult experience is acknowledged alongside a careful exploration of the socially constructed nature of different stages of adulthood across the lifespan. In its analysis of developmental stages, the book covers key issues of current concern including emerging and early adulthood, 'the sandwich generation' (those caring for both their children and their parents), later life, medicalisation, neurodiversity, long term and degenerative conditions, bereavement, and grief. Both vulnerabilities and ways to enhance resilience encouraging healthy ageing are examined. Utilising practice-oriented case studies and reflective questions it illustrates how psychosocial perspectives may be applied within family, workplace, health, and social care contexts. It offers under graduate and graduate students of social work, nursing, mental health, education, psychology, human development, gerontology and ageing, the tools needed to evaluate the interlocking psychosocial factors influencing the lives of adults at different stages of life.

A History of 'Unitary Psychosis': A Contribution to the Historical Epistemology of Nineteenth Century Psychiatry. (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences) 199 pp. 2025:7 (Springer, GW) <749-1393>
ISBN 978-3-031-90181-2 hard ¥35,306.- (税込) EUR 149.99
Gerhart Zeller's prize-winning 1961 study of the history of the concept of unitary psychosis has never before been published in German or English. To date, the manuscript remains by far the best historical account of the early development of the concept in Germany. The editors' introduction analyzes Zeller's monograph on three temporal levels. First, as a rediscovered original contribution to historical scholarship on nineteenth century psychiatric classification. Second, as an historical document in its own right, situated on the threshold between the murderous atrocities of the Holocaust and the psychiatric reforms of the 1970s and '80s (Psychiatrie-Enquete). Third, as a unique contribution to post-Neo-Kraepelinian discourse and to the critiques of contemporary psychiatric nosologies (DSM) and research agendas (RDoC). In helping to elucidate the historical evolution of dimensional approaches to psychiatric classification, the monograph is likely to resonate within wider current biomedical trends toward personalized medicine and molecular diagnostics, and to find a readership among psychiatric practitioners and historians alike.
