Cunningham, Jack P. / Foxon, Adam / Gammie, R. M. (eds.),
Mind, Soul and the Cosmos in the High Middle Ages. (Studies in the History of Philosophy of Mind 31) 251 pp. 2025:2 (Springer, GW) <739-15>
ISBN 978-3-031-78875-8 hard ¥32,644.- (税込) EUR 139.99 *
This is a unique volume in which a critical introduction and multiple chapters offer a wide-ranging discussion of medieval conceptions of the nature of humankind, its relationship with the universe, and the processes of thinking by which both are conceptualized. Concentrating on the centuries spanning the High Middle Ages, chapters include in-depth analyses of such ideas as the habit as the ultimate dwelling place of the soul, the Soul of the Universe and its relation to humanity, and the Agent Intellect's part in the functions of the mind regarding abstraction and intuition. This book explores how metaphysical Intelligences interact with our movements, how the desires of our minds affect the acquisition of knowledge, as well as asking how and why analysis of the makeup of animal souls took place. The High Middle Ages was a crucially important epoch in the history of intellectual endeavor. This volume appeals to students and researchers; it discusses and evaluates the contributions on the subjects of mind, soul, and the cosmos of some of the finest Christian, Jewish, and Moslem intellects in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Theologians, philosophers, and cosmologists include Aquinas, Grosseteste, Avicenna, Gersonides, Buridan, the School of Chartres, as well as many others. The overarching theme of this collection of essays is that vitally new conceptions of what it meant to be a rational Human, the purpose of thought in relation to the journey of the soul, and the metaphysical character of our universe contributed enormously to the paradigm-shifting nature of this age.

Lewis, Mark Edward,
Self and Body in Early East Asian Thought. (Elements in Ancient East Asia) 75 pp. 2025:1 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <739-17>
ISBN 978-1-009-48689-7 hard ¥15,246.- (税込) GB£ 55.00 *
ISBN 978-1-108-97219-2 paper ¥4,989.- (税込) GB£ 18.00 *
This Element examines evolving methods of cultivating the embodied self, including healing diseases and creating a superior person, in late Warring States and early imperial East Asia. It analyses many topics, including the textualization of bodily regimens and therapies, their systematization, their dissemination among different (and sometimes rival) social groups, and the diversity of traditions - religious, pharmacological, nourishing of life - that contested and combined to form a hegemonic medical practice. These topics in turn feature several issues: models of the body, regimens of cultivating and extending vitality, models of disease, and therapies for these ailments. All these ideas will be refined and extended through comparison with early Western medical traditions.

Marinescu, Rares Ilie,
Proclus on Aristotle on Plato: A Case Study on Motion. (Cambridge Classical Studies) 262 pp. 2025:5 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <739-18>
ISBN 978-1-009-52762-0 hard ¥23,562.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
ISBN 978-1-009-52759-0 paper ¥8,312.- (税込) GB£ 29.99
This is a study of Proclus' engagement with Aristotle's theory of motion, with a specific focus on Aristotle's criticism of Plato. It refutes the often-held view that Proclus - in line with other Neoplatonists - adheres to the idea of an essential harmony between Plato and Aristotle. Proclus' views on motion, a central concept in his thought, are illuminated by examining his Aristotelian background. The results enhance our view of the reception and authority of Aristotle in late antiquity, a crucial period for the transmission of Aristotelian thought which immensely shaped the later reading of his work. The book also counteracts the commonly held view that late antique philosophers straightforwardly accepted Aristotle as an authority in certain areas such as logic or natural philosophy.

Salles, Ricardo,
The Stoic Cosmos: Conflagration, Cosmogony, and Recurrence in Early Stoicism. 320 pp. 2025:6 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <739-19>
ISBN 978-1-009-42279-6 hard ¥24,948.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
Stoic cosmology held that our cosmos is periodically destroyed and restored. In this, it is unique compared to earlier cosmologies. Ricardo Salles offers a detailed reconstruction of the philosophical ideas behind this thesis which explains its uniqueness and how it competes with earlier cosmologies. The reconstruction is based on a rigorous analysis of the evidence, made accessible to non-specialists who are familiar with the history of ancient philosophy but do not specialise in Stoicism. Furthermore, the book reveals how the Stoics combined their meteorology, their cosmology, their physics and their metaphysics to explain natural phenomena, thereby illustrating how different disciplines can interact in ancient philosophy. It also refers to central questions in the interpretation of Stoicism, such as the role of the Stoic god in cosmology.

Weiss, Roslyn,
Justice in Plato's Republic: The Lessons of Book 1. 218 pp. 2025:1 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <739-20>
ISBN 978-1-009-46652-3 hard ¥23,562.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *
In Book 4 of Plato's Republic, Socrates introduces what is regarded by scholars as the Platonic account of justice, according to which it is essentially internal and self-regarding, a matter of relations among the parts of a city or soul. In this book, Roslyn Weiss contends that there is another notion of justice, as other-regarding and external, which is to be found in a series of conversations in Book 1 between Socrates and three successive interlocutors. Weiss considers the relationship between justice as conceived in Book 1 and Book 4, and carefully examines what can be learned from each of the arguments. Her close analysis of Book 1 brings to light what Socrates really believed about justice, and extracts and explores this Book's many insights concerning justice-at both the political and the personal level.

Badiou, Alain,
Parmenides: Ontological Figure, Being 1. Tr. by S. Spitzer et al. (The Seminars of Alain Badiou) 272 pp. 2025:5 (Columbia U. Pr., US) <739-14>
ISBN 978-0-231-18094-8 hard ¥7,276.- (税込) US$ 35.00
Alain Badiou's 1985 seminar on Parmenides initiated his ongoing dialogue with the pre-Socratic philosopher and set out some of the foundational ideas of his own major philosophical works, including Being and Event. The seminar provides both a new understanding of the importance of Parmenides in establishing the fundamental terms of philosophy and a vital account of the intimate relationship between philosophy and mathematics. For Badiou, Parmenides inaugurates the history of philosophy by linking being, thinking, and nonbeing in a "Borromean knot"-a linkage in which the relationship between any two terms requires the mediation of a third. Badiou traces the permutations of this connection among fundamental concepts as it was transmitted to later thinkers, including Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hegel, and Heidegger. He also argues that Parmenides's account of philosophy establishes a new kind of formal reasoning that, like mathematics, breaks with the Greek mythic and poetic traditions and their assumption that truth derives from sensory experience. An important prehistory for Being and Event, this seminar demonstrates Badiou's unparalleled ability to recast the fundamental questions of philosophy.
