Slate, Nico, The Art of Freedom: Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and the Making of Modern India. 368 pp. 2024:6 (U. Pittsburgh Pr., US) <717-807>
ISBN 978-0-8229-4820-9 hard ¥9,652.- (税込) US$ 45.00 *

A Revealing New Biography of a Pathbreaking Female Figure in Modern Indian History. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay (1903?1988) was a prominent socialist, anticolonial and antiracist activist, champion of women's rights, and advocate for the arts and crafts. Defying the borders of gender, nation, and race, her efforts spanned social movements and played a leading role in the creation of modern India and the development of the Global South. In The Art of Freedom, Nico Slate showcases new archival materials to document Kamaladevi's campaign to become the first woman elected to provincial office; her confrontation with Gandhi that helped open the salt march of 1930 to women; her leadership of the All India Women's Conference and the Congress Socialist Party; her pioneering work with refugees during the Partition of India in 1947; the major impact she had on the arts in postcolonial India; and her own career on the stage and screen. Slate also draws upon underexplored details from her personal life, providing new context for her experiences as a child widow, her remarriage to the mercurial actor/poet Harin Chattopadhyay, and her divorce (among the first civil divorces in modern India). Taken as a whole, Kamaladevi's life offers a uniquely revealing vantage point on the making of modern India-a vantage point that centers the interconnections between struggles often seen as distinct, and that reminds us of the full promise of Indian democracy. AUTHOR: Nico Slate is professor in the Department of History at Carnegie Mellon University. His research examines struggles against racism and imperialism in the United States and India. His most recent book is Brothers: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Race.

Onwumechili, Chuka, Women's Football in Africa. (Women, Sport and Physical Activity) 176 pp. 2024:5 (Routledge, UK) <717-836>
ISBN 978-1-032-66561-0 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *

This is the first book to take an in-depth look at women's football in Africa. Exploring the history, contemporary landscape, and future development of the women's game on the African continent, this book offers an important new perspective on the rise of women's sport more broadly. This book traces the history of women's soccer in Africa from its introduction during the period of European colonization and its subsequent ban by colonial authorities, through to the present day period of rapidly increasing spectatorship, rising participation rates, and growing media interest. It reflects on the social obstacles to girls' participation, including sociocultural and religious barriers, as well as important social issues in football such as homophobia, discrimination, and abuse, and considers why certain countries have dominated African competitions, including Nigeria, Ghana, and, lately, South Africa, Equitorial Guinea, and Cameroon. This book also examines the crucial role played by youth academies, and FIFA's leadership role, and considers the challenges faced by African players, clubs, and countries on the global stage. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in football, sport history, women's sport, Africa, development studies, or the relationships between sport and wider society.
