ギグ・エコノミーにおける移民労働者
Della Puppa, Francesco / Dhar, D. / Montagna, N. (eds.), Migrant Labour in the Gig Economy: The Intersection of Migrant Labor, Platform Capitalism, and Resistance. (Dynamics of Virtual Work) 172 pp. 2025:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <753-461>
ISBN 978-3-031-91261-0 hard ¥34,646.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book explores the gig economy and the role of migrant workers, which has been widely documented, but under-researched. In the last forty years work and employment in the advanced economies has undergone profound transformations and, more recently, a key role has been played by the development of platform capitalism and the gig economy as a way of organising work and providing services. There are still huge gaps in research on how platform-mediated gig work impacts the structural vulnerability of migrant workers and how this can be addressed by welfare policies. The aim of this book is to address some of these issues. It includes empirical and theoretical contributions from across the globe on topics such as migrant workers and digitalised work, artificial Intelligence and work, digitalisation and work-related policy, digital surveillance, labour struggles in the digitalised service sector, unionism and self-organisation in the gig economy. It will be of great interest to scholars and students of work and employment, the future of work, social movements, migration and labour studies.

ISBN 978-1-032-99867-1 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Welfare racism is a combination of racial discrimination in the welfare system and racist discourses used in the name of the welfare state. Presenting a global overview of discourses of welfare racism across the world by institutional actors, public figures, political parties, and mass media, this book examines the evolution, character, role, and consequences of racialized welfare discourse towards immigrants, asylum seekers, and BIPOC.This volume explores how racialized welfare discourse fuels and legitimises inequality, as well as its role in public policies concerning social citizenship, and its role as a structural element of migration policies and welfare policies. The chapters focus on a variety of global contexts to analyse how welfare racism is linked to the historical development of the welfare state, the dismantling of social welfare in Western countries, the structures and practices of public administration, the intertwining of welfare racism and welfare classism, political discourses, the media, and the role of far-right parties, academics, and professionals in the spread of racialized welfare discourse.Presenting a novel, in-depth study of the phenomenon from a critical racism perspective, this book expands knowledge on the ideological-discursive dimension of welfare racism. It will appeal to scholars, post-graduate students, and professionals with interests in inequality, migration, public discourse, communication, mass media, social policy, and welfare.

Detailing the contemporary obstacles and battles that marginalized groups must fight, this handbook provides a comprehensive account that enables readers to understand the harmful nature of these issues and how they serve to place and keep marginalized groups at a disadvantage. The Routledge Handbook on Marginalized Groups in the United States and their Challenges covers the belief systems, social and economic systems, political institutions, and public policies that aim to place and keep marginalized groups at a disadvantage, describing the intractable nature of these barriers, how inequality and inequity persist, why changing the status quo is so difficult, and why efforts to change the status quo seem not to bear results. Tien, Grace / Funes, Maria Eugenia (eds.), Religion and Racial Capitalism. 215 pp. 2025:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <753-227>
ISBN 978-3-031-96824-2 hard ¥32,171.- (税込) EUR 129.99

Much of the discourse around diversity, equity, and inclusion have encountered two blind spots. First, discourse in the academy and beyond have prioritized the intersectionality of race and gender but neglected the intersectionality of race and class. Secondly, the resurgence (and now backlash) to diversity, equity, and inclusion have largely benefited cultural and economic elites on the political left and left behind the working class. This book suggests that the framework of racial capitalism can help bring attention to these gaps, in part due to renewed scholarly interest in racial capitalism across academic disciplines. This edited volume is largely motivated by the above gaps in academic and mainstream discourse and makes two primary contributions: first, we examine the unique intersection of religion and racial capitalism, and second, we analyze case studies of racial capitalism in country contexts outside of the U.S., drawing on case studies from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. Scholars, particularly historians, have largely examined racial capitalism in the U.S. context. Studies in this edited volume highlight how the challenges and manifestations of racial capitalism, or the complex, intertwined relationship between racial and economic inequality, are not particular to America and the West. Part I of the book investigates the past, or "origin stories," of religion and racial capitalism. Part II, the present, underscores contemporary empirical studies of religion and racial capitalism, like how religious institutions have reinforced, justified, or even promoted racial and economic injustices. Lastly, Part III, future, presents ways forward, or potential interventions in response to religion and racial capitalism.

Gallagher, Sara, Black Wests: Reshaping Race and Place in Popular Culture. (The Popular West 2) 194 pp. 2025:7 (U. Oklahoma Pr., US) <753-1692>
ISBN 978-0-8061-9543-8 hard ¥9,504.- (税込) US$ 45.00

The story of settlers in the American West, with its tales of cowboys, prospectors, and frontiersmen, is often overwhelmingly white. Black Wests brings to light the pivotal and largely overlooked contributions of Black Americans to the western narrative. Tracing Black Western storytelling through a range of media across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Sara Gallagher offers a unique perspective on the Black Western - its history, its critical texts and moments in print and cinema, and the singular experiences of Black creators in the American West. Significantly, different media presented particular opportunities, and particular limitations, for Black creators. Gallagher explores how visual mediums, especially film, played a vital role in countering negative portrayals of Black characters in popular Western cinema. In this light, she examines the likes of Oscar Micheaux, a homesteader-turned visionary film director, and Herb Jeffries, the famed singer whose role as the Black 'singing cowboy' earned him stardom in Hollywood. Her reading encompasses the well-known - like Nat Love, legendary cowboy whose life has become an enduring symbol of the Black American West Pauline Hopkins, a journalist and novelist whose works introduced Black America to the dime Western and the lesser known, such as Jennie Carter, a frontierswoman who wrote about her experience in California. Concluding with a nod to modern artists like Beyonce and Lil Nas X, Black Wests illustrates how this imaginative form continues to flourish. An enlightening and entertaining journey through the history of the Black Western, Gallagher's work restores Black storytelling to its critical place in the making of the American West in popular culture.

Intersectional Intimacy: Identity Work of Racialized Women in Online Dating Cultures is the first book to examine both shared and divergent stories from those who identify as women with race-related experiences navigating online dating cultures, and to explore how their experience of intimate relationships is mediated by the apps. While many women turn to dating apps in search of intimacies, their navigations are continuously mediated and challenged by hierarchies of race, gender, class, and sexuality embedded in online dating cultures. This book traces the ongoing and layered processes through which racialized women develop their stories of online intimacies by making use of their identities and further cultivate their subjectivities. It also addresses the global dimensions of these practices, illustrating how global and local power structures intersect with personal experience, afforded by the popularity of dating apps, and how these readings change with their mobility.Intersectional Intimacy will be an essential text for students of Gender Studies, Sociology, and Politics, as well as those interested in Race, Media Studies, Digital Culture, and Communications.

Foxworth, Raymond / Boulding, Carew / Maddison, S. (eds.), Racism and Resentment in Indigenous-Settler Relations: Lessons from the Voice. (Indigenous-Settler Relations in Australia and the World) 148 pp. 2025:9 (Springer, GW) <753-1779>
ISBN 978-3-031-95271-5 hard ¥29,696.- (税込) EUR 119.99

This book looks at deep-seated elements of racism in Indigenous-settler relations through detailed analyses of the October 2023 Voice to Parliament referendum in Australia and its outcome---and discusses what might come next. The Voice to Parliament referendum proposed a constitutional amendment to create an Indigenous advisory body in the Australian Parliament. The referendum met with a resounding defeat. Against this background, the book analyses survey results during the referendum that asked direct questions about attitudes towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as about policies and issues important to many Indigenous peoples. It situates Australia's experience in this election with other research on attitudes towards Indigenous peoples, rights, and policy issues. The book also interrogates another major survey in the lead-up to the referendum, questioning those findings in relation to racism. It looks at possible learnings for the social sciences about Indigenous politics and examines the ways in which Australian settler nationalism created obstacles to the referendum's success and considers the limits of deliberation for Indigenous political claims.

Banerjee, Paula / Chowdhory, Nasreen / Singh, Priya (eds.), The Postcolonial Compendium: Keywords in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies. 284 pp. 2025:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <753-1799>
ISBN 978-981-9654-46-8 hard ¥32,171.- (税込) EUR 129.99

The postcolonial compendium aims at a compilation and brief explication of key terms used in the multidisciplinary field of forced migration and refugee studies. There have been significant debates, contributions, and interpretations in recent years which have reshaped the way academia analyses and maps refugee and migration studies, at the same time, expanding its scope. Research on refugees and forced migrants has had a long history cutting across disciplines, exploring multiple dynamics such as forced and voluntary movements, displacement and dispossession, heterogeneity and agency of forced migrants, human rights, humanitarianism, protection, practice and policy. In addition, academics, policy makers and practitioners are still contending with the diverse challenges that remain in the aftermath of a global pandemic and continue to permeate the refugee and migrant space exacerbating the precarious state of public health, particularly in the global south with far reaching consequences. At this critical juncture/crossroads, migrant and refugee studies as a field of enquiry is rapidly expanding and diversifying, concomitantly, its terminology is constantly evolving to keep pace with the burgeoning discipline, which found its moorings as a separate entity in the early 1980s. With the development of refugee and forced migration studies, academic research as well as advocacy in terms of the rights of migrants and refugees have acquired a global reach which in turn has induced the emergence of a rapidly growing literature focused on the same, including handbooks devoted to the study of refugees and forced migrants from an interdisciplinary perspective. In comparison, the vocabulary or terminology of refugee and forced migration studies, which has amplified by leaps and bounds in scope and importance, has not yet found a separate, focused and comprehensive compendium dedicated to itself. The Postcolonial Compendium: Keywords in Forced Migration and Refugee Studies intends to fill this lacuna/void.

Drawing on established and recent empirical research from across the globe, in dialogue with scholars of migrant transnationalism, the book offers an overview of approaches, conceptual tools, thematic areas, and methods of investigation. Thus, this short reader sheds light on the fundamentals of existing knowledge on migrant transnationalism: What are the key questions in migrant transnationalism research today? How does a transnational perspective deepen our understanding of migration, (social) mobility, diversity, inclusion and development? As a source for researchers, students and policy makers, this short reader is essential reading which shows why looking at the world through a transnational lens adds value, for anyone interested in migration and social change.

Ethnic Minority Agency in Mainstream Education provides a comprehensive overview of the lives of BAME educational professionals in a regional environment, dominated by racism, both explicit and implicit. Each chapter is informed by original research examining these different strands of the teaching profession and revealing the stories of their aspirations and obstacles in becoming successful educators. Irrespective of the role, position, level of experience of BAME professionals in mainstream education, there is a thread of marginalisation, injustice and oppression that runs through their individual and collective narratives. Across the various chapters the experiences of school leaders, teachers, teaching assistants and teacher educators are captured through the empirical research which foregrounds the exploration, analysis and discussion. For some of the authors, their lived experience is intertwined with their chapter content and for others a candid examination of their ontological positioning and its impact on the storied experiences of their research participant. Ethnic Minority Agency in Mainstream Education offers a platform for senior leaders in mainstream education to take action based on the findings of this research. Recommendations for change and reform focused on the regional experience of BAME educators are presented, demonstrating the urgency for more targeted action to centre support for BAME professionals and to remove the explicit and implicit barriers.

Daughters of (Re)Imagined Early Childhood Education: Reflective Narratives of Black Women Educators in Texas during Covid-19 delves into the transformative journeys of seven Black women early childhood educators in north Texas from 2020 to 2022. Amidst the challenges of a global pandemic and the socio-political upheaval brought by anti-critical race theory legislation, these educators reflect on how their intersecting identities shaped their unique pedagogical approaches. This compelling book highlights the personal growth and pedagogical evolution of these educators, emphasizing the need to move beyond superficial niceties and color blindness in early learning spaces. By centering the lived experiences of Black women on the front lines of education during crises of health and racial injustice, this book offers invaluable insights for early childhood educators, teacher educators, and researchers engaged in critical qualitative and participatory action research. Daughters of (Re)Imagined Early Childhood Education invites educational stakeholders to learn from these narratives, challenging them to question the status quo and envision a more equitable future for early childhood education. This collection is a vital addition to the literature, showcasing the resilience and innovation of Black women educators in a time of unprecedented change.

ISBN 978-1-4744-9457-1 hard ¥27,483.- (税込) GB£ 95.00

What happens when the second generation - the children of immigrants - moves to their parents' homeland? A Place in the Homeland: Turkish-German Return Migration answers this question for the Turkish-German second-generation, sons and daughters of the Turkish guestworkers and political refugees who migrated to Germany in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Based on 71 in-depth narrative interviews, their life-stories of growing up in German industrial cities and then 'returning' to Turkey are traced through their experiences of childhood and socialisation, relocation to Turkey, earning a living, managing family and other relationships, adapting to an environment that many found challenging and developing new, hybrid identities in the ancestral homeland. The key finding is that 'place matters', and experiences are compared and contrasted between second-generation returnees in the megalopolis of Istanbul, the tourist city of Antalya and a range of provincial urban and rural environments in other regions of Turkey.

Kukreja, Reena (ed.), South Asians in Southern Europe: Exploring Labour, Identity, and Desire. (Migration, Diasporas and Citizenship) 436 pp. 2025:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <753-1823>
ISBN 978-3-031-94758-2 hard ¥34,646.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book focuses on an emerging group of low income South Asian migrants who are increasingly migrating to four Southern European countries: Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. While homogenized under the overarching category of "South Asian," the migrant trajectories and migrant experiences and encounters in these host countries are quite disparate and distinct from each other. The empirically rich contributions in the volume examine how national, religious, ethnic, gender, and/or class differences shape differing outcomes in migration trajectories, livelihood strategies, inclusion in host communities, family reunification, and migrant subjectivity for this set of racialized migrants and their families. The volume focusses on four broad themes, namely: Migration governance and labour regimes; Migration strategies and experience - transnational mobility and social mobility; Identity and belonging; and Family and gender relations. This book fills a gap in scholarly works in the fields of migration studies, diaspora studies, and migrant labour, and it will be of interest to students and scholars in these and related fields.

Lin, Shasha, Chinese Americans' Perceptions of Race, Education, and Affirmative Action. (Palgrave Studies in Race, Inequality and Social Justice in Education) 243 pp. 2025:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <753-1826>
ISBN 978-3-031-94780-3 hard ¥39,596.- (税込) EUR 159.99

Chinese Americans have emerged as increasingly prominent and influential actors in the decades-long debates over affirmative action in college admissions, which was struck down by the US Supreme Court in June 2023. Despite being portrayed as the Asian origin group least supportive of affirmative action, little is understood about how the broader Chinese American community makes meanings around this complex and contested policy. Drawing on ethnographic observations in California and diverse viewpoints from students, parents, organizational leaders, activists, college admissions consultants, and educators within the Chinese American community, this book probes the nuanced and divergent ways Chinese Americans make sense of race, education, and affirmative action. It finds a community grappling with the potent Asian admissions myths, questions of fairness in college admissions, and their positioning within racial discourses and politics. This book is a timely contribution to the much-needed dialogue on race, ethnicity, and higher education in the post-affirmative action era. It is also a must-read for university policymakers who aim to (re)establish public trust amidst declining confidence in higher education and heightened judicial and public scrutiny of their admissions policies and practices.

Anti-Roma racism, one of Europe's oldest and most enduring racisms, has been concealed in mainstream theories and discourse. This book situates anti-Roma racism within national and intra-continental histories and global scholarship, exploring its specific and universal underpinnings and manifestations and its interconnectedness with other systems of oppression. The Permanence of Anti-Roma Racism: (Un)uttered Sentences offers a theoretical perspective on the roots of anti-Roma racism, tracing its genesis in the system of racialized slavery in the historical territories of present-day Romania and the politics of killings, expulsions, and entry-bans across Europe in the late Middle Ages. Employing theoretical frameworks of structural oppressions, anti-colonial and decolonial thought, racialization, and intersectionality, this book analyzes how deep historical legacies continue to shape anti-Roma racism as an enduring, structural form of oppression. This scholarly work is essential for policymakers, practitioners, scholars, and students working on the sociology of racialization, global race and structural racisms, and modern European history. It defines, categorizes, and unpacks the processes and mechanisms of racialization and anti-Roma racism, shedding light on a system of oppression too often left unspoken.

ISBN 978-0-19-768652-2 paper ¥9,493.- (税込) US$ 44.95

Black youth face unique challenges at the intersection of interpersonal harm and systemic racial oppression. Yet, widely used evidence-based treatments like Trauma Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment (TF-CBT) often overlook race-related stress in their assessments, case conceptualizations, and interventions. Considering Racial Trauma and Racial Socialization in TF-CBT for Black Youth fills this gap by equipping clinicians with culturally responsive tools and strategies tailored to the needs of Black clients. Written by licensed clinical psychologist and trauma expert Dr. Isha Metzger, it is an essential guide for mental health professionals working with Black children, teens, and families impacted by interpersonal and racial trauma. Grounded in decades of research, clinical practice, and community engagement, Dr. Metzger presents a practical, powerful framework for integrating racial socialization into every phase of TF-CBT. The book offers case examples, sample scripts, clinical rationales, supervision prompts, and practical activities aligned with each component of TF-CBT, from psychoeducation and relaxation to trauma narrative and safety planning. The book also includes assessment tools, discussion guides, handouts, and quizzes to support learning and implementation. Accessible, engaging, and deeply informed by both science and lived experience, this book is an easy-to-use, practical resource for mental health clinicians, community practitioners, and trainees in psychology, social work, and other mental health fields working to deliver culturally affirming, trauma-informed care to Black youth and their families.

ISBN 978-1-032-98597-8 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Migration, Inclusiveness and Sustainability examines the relationships between migration, inclusiveness and sustainability in Europe, through nexus thinking. It identifies inclusiveness and sustainability as key pillars of transformational change as defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The book's approach recognizes that appropriate strategies for one objective must equally consider the others because of the existence of intrinsic interlinkages between these goals. Relevant questions explored include: How can inclusiveness be conceptualized and operationalized in migration systems? How can migration governance best promote sustainable development? How do inclusiveness and sustainability relate to each other as political objectives? In order to respond to these and related questions, this book is structured around three sections. Each section focuses on a specific nexus (the Migration-Inclusiveness Nexus, the Migration-Sustainability Nexus, the Inclusiveness-Sustainability Nexus). The conclusion directly addresses the Migration-Inclusiveness-Sustainability Nexus within the framework of transformational development promoted by the SDGs.A novel analysis of two typically separate and distinct scholarly fields of research, this volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of International Relations, Politics, Sustainable Development, Public Policy, Migration and Refugee Studies, Human Rights and Development Studies.

ISBN 978-1-032-60929-4 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Forced Migration, Masculinities, and Vulnerabilities in the Mediterranean explores the role of intersectional power hierarchies and the social reproduction of vulnerability in shaping forced migrant men's embodied realities of suffering along the Central Mediterranean migration route (CMR), which connects Sub-Saharan Africa to Sicily via Libya. Based on life history interviews and observational research collected from Sub-Saharan international protection-holders and seekers in Sicily, the book expands our understanding of the violence-migration nexus by exploring refugee men's gendered mobilities. Participants' narratives of gendered embodiment within the trans-Mediterranean illegality industry are used to shed light on the violence continuum produced by their marginalised position within locally salient hierarchies of masculinities across different migration stages. Following the ethnographic encounter between the researcher and participants in the racialised landscape of the Mediterranean migration 'crisis', the performance of competent manhood emerges as a crucial narrative site where forced migrant men can contest their protracted experiences of marginalisation and reclaim subjectivity. Overall, the book views the relationships between forced migration, masculinities, and vulnerabilities as a locus which reveals participants' neglected social welfare needs and demands in postcolonial Europe.Forced Migration, Masculinities, and Vulnerabilities in the Mediterranean appeals to those with research interests in migration, gender, sexuality, postcoloniality, race, ethnicity, European studies and humanitarianism.

Experience tells us, and studies confirm, that women faculty of color are among the most overworked, unfairly criticized, and least rewarded individuals serving higher education today. They are also the most thwarted when it comes to the basic goals of an academic career: tenure, security, and personal satisfaction. This, despite ranking as some of the most talented teachers we have: Women faculty of color disproportionately overdeliver on higher education's loftiest promise - preparing students to contribute to the world. In this book, these highly effective, overworked, underappreciated women will find expert guidance, encouragement, and practical steps to meet the outsized challenges women of color face in academia, and finally get what they 39 ve long since earned. In Empowered, Chavella T. Pittman distills decades of practice to show women faculty of color how to be unapologetically authentic in their teaching, speak up in reviews about their classroom excellence, and to offer themselves compassion. And, to recover a sense of joy in what they do. Drawing on extensive research, Pittman provides active measures for withstanding intersectional race and gender tensions, exercises to inoculate against toxic dynamics, and tools to resist being silenced and support being heard. Through these empowering strategies and exercises, women faculty of color can become the most powerful versions of themselves in their classrooms, and go on to make the most of their careers, contributions, and lives.

Multiraciality is not an identity to be fractured or abstracted by others, but rather integrated across multiple racial locations. Multiraciality is sophisticated and its weaving of complexity into forging new congruence posits new ways to understand identity. Multiraciality disrupts monoracial constructs and can be disorienting to others who are unable to have sufficient knowledge of self to be able to conceptualize that other persons occupy multiple racial locations across broader systems of culture and identity domains. Multiraciality is to be celebrated, explored, and made visible. Thus, this text is also reflected of different author identities and from the different academic disciplines of education, sociology, and counseling.

ISBN 978-1-83549-931-3 hard ¥23,232.- (税込) US$ 110.00

Recruiting more teachers of color, especially Black men, is a challenge. Recruitment alone is not sufficient to increase the presence of Black males in American classrooms, which is currently less than two percent. Black Male Educators in American Classrooms explores the unique challenges and valuable perspectives Black males bring to the school setting and explores how to better understand, incentivize, and effectively utilize Black males in America's classrooms and the widespread impact this can have in K-12 education, in the community, and throughout society. Documenting the results of a multi-year study carried out by the Editors, chapters delve into the mental, emotional, and intellectual development of Black male educators and those they connect with throughout the school community, why they leave or remain in K-12 education, and what they see as the role of school leaders in helping them achieve their purpose as contributing, respected, and valued educational leaders. The personal narratives of Black male educators include their recommendations to improve strategies to support them in classrooms and throughout society. Readers will experience first-hand how being a black male educator impacted their lives, their students and their communities. Not only are stereotypes dissolved through the research and personal narratives of Black male educators, but the proposed initiatives also suggest and offer strategies for continuing growth of Black male educators within the classroom, as academic leaders, role models, and other levels of engagement.

ISBN 978-3-031-93025-6 hard ¥9,896.- (税込) EUR 39.99

This book explores the portrayal of refugee experiences in children's picture books using insights from Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Chapter 1 considers this emerging genre of children's literature within its social and educational context and explains how the narratives embedded within these books were examined. Chapter 2 cites key studies in the field of children's picture books about refugees to uncover common narrative arcs, characterisations, themes and educative value. Remaining chapters detail the three core elements of Campbell's canonical narrative arc to review how the experience of refugees is presented in modern picture books using this familiar narrative structure as a means of exploring a humanitarian issue with overt political overtones. In so doing, the authors employ an innovative means of analysing picture books that deal with refugees by positioning them within a familiar narrative arc that belies the fear of difference they may otherwise represent.

ISBN 978-3-031-96754-2 hard ¥32,171.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book provides an in-depth analysis of how Muslim Community Organisations (MCOs) in Australia perceived and responded to Islamophobia between 2014 and 2018-a period marked by the rise of ISIS, a surge in anti-Muslim political rhetoric, and culminating in the Christchurch terrorist attack on praying Muslims in New Zealand. Grounded in an agency-structure framework, it explores how MCOs navigated systemic power to resist Islamophobia through civic, discursive, and political strategies. Arguing that their agency is both pragmatic and transformative, the book reveals how these organisations operated within and against the constraints of Australian politics. Building on this analysis, the final chapter reflects on the author's engagement with Muslim organisers to examine how the Australian state's response to the 2023 War on Gaza-marked by its complicity-shook the Muslim community, catalysing new forms of activism that depart from the pre-Christchurch context and may redefine the contours of anti-Islamophobia, Muslim-led advocacy. This study is essential reading for scholars of Islamophobia, social movements, and Australian politics, offering valuable insights into the intersections of power, resistance, and identity.

ISBN 978-3-031-93812-2 paper ¥8,659.- (税込) EUR 34.99

How has it become possible for the Australian state to gain public acquiescence to develop one of world's most punitive systems of processing asylum-seekers; one that not only contravenes Australia's international humanitarian commitments, but that, in the words of activists, medical professionals, and the detainees themselves amounts to torture? In this highly readable account academic, journalist and advocate Dr Julie Macken takes a psychoanalytic approach to both the country and its public to uncover why. Dr Macken's investigation begins by outlining how the nation's failure to mourn its colonial past has led to a state of collective melancholia, with the result that denial and psychological splitting have prevented genuine reconciliation with First Nations peoples. The central part of the book offers a compelling account of the development of Australia's current system of privatised immigration detention and the political, economic and media forces that have sustained it that will resonate globally. In conclusion the book posits that political action in these circumstances-however distressing and visceral-should be adopted as a mental health strategy for both the person and the nation. This timely work offers fresh insights for those working and studying in the areas of human rights, media, refugee studies, race theory, politics, mental health and psychosocial studies.

Ethnic Minorities in Israel and Turkey: Inside Outsiders offers a compelling comparative analysis of state-minority relations, revealing how national identity is constructed and contested through the lens of two of the region's most enduring ethnic conflicts. Through extensive fieldwork and elite interviews, this book investigates how Israeli and Turkish political elites have responded to the political mobilization of their largest minorities - Palestinians and Kurds. It traces the historical trajectories of nation-building, examines the securitization of minority rights, and explores the ways in which demands for autonomy, recognition, and equal participation are interpreted as existential threats to national unity. Drawing on the ethnic boundary-making framework, the chapters analyse how divergent strategies - exclusion in Israel and forced assimilation in Turkey - have shaped patterns of inclusion and exclusion, with particular attention to the symbolic role of trans-border kinship, collective rights, and political representation. By highlighting the narratives of political elites, this book illuminates how ethnic minorities come to be treated as "inside outsiders," navigating the tensions between national loyalty and ethno-cultural affiliation. Essential reading for scholars of comparative politics, nationalism, Middle East studies, and ethnic relations, this book deepens our understanding of how contested identities are negotiated in the modern nation-state.

With this book, Bernd Reiter reflects on over three decades of research on race, exclusion, inequality, white supremacy and the defense of privilege in Brazil to explore how social hierarchies, honor, and dignity perpetuate systemic disparities in Latin America. Status, as a structuring force of societies, Reiter argues, offers a different lens through which to analyze Latin American societies.Combining the works of Toennies, Weber, and Bourdieu with those of Guerreiro Ramos, Raymundo Faoro, Florestan Fernandes, and Jacob Gorender, Reiter contends that Latin American societies are best understood as status societies where the organizing principle is not class, gender, or race alone, but honor-a set of cultural norms, behaviors, and practices that confer social recognition and prestige. Status is not purely hereditary, nor is it solely a function of economic class. Instead, it is a multifaceted construct that incorporates elements of race, class, gender, cultural capital, behavior, and descent.A passionate and illuminating alternative to the study of inequality in Latin America, this book adds important nuance to discussions of how to devise more equitable and inclusive strategies for the future.

When Otto Habsburg, son of the last emperor of the Austria-Hungarian Empire Karl I, died in 2011, among those who prayed at the funeral in Vienna's Stephansdom was Mustafa Efendi Ceric, the Reis ul-ulema of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This was to honour the long-lasting relationship between the bygone empire of the Catholic Habsburgs with European Muslims. The cornerstone of this association was the 1912 Islam Act (Islamgesetz) of the Habsburgs, which made Austria-Hungary the first Catholic European state to confer official status to Islam. This book explores the legacy of this act and the ways in which it continues to impact the legal frameworks and political structures governing Islam and Muslim communities in the successor states of Austria-Hungary. It discusses the unique coexistence in Central Europe of centuries-old, 'indigenous' European Muslims with recently settled Muslim immigrants, and the trajectory of their interactions with the state. This volume is therefore not only crucial to the debate about European Islam but also to the question of the legal and political framework of Islamic religious communities in a secular Europe.

This Open Access book offers a mixed-method approach to analysing anti-Muslim narratives in interactions between the far right and the Western European mainstream. By exploring narratives that portray Islam as inherently other, the essays in this collection interrogate the effects of such narratives on the targeted group and mainstream society. Authors explore mechanisms, such as historical othering, media agenda building, and online mobilization of the far right, and harness historical analysis, media content, social media network analyses and qualitative surveys, to propose that the effects of such media narratives are far from purely symbolic.
