McDowell, Paula (ed.), Reading McLuhan Reading. 164 pp. 2023:3 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2024 <690-957>
ISBN 978-1-032-42763-8 hard ¥36,162.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
ISBN 978-1-032-42764-5 paper ¥11,568.- (税込) GB£ 39.99 *

Sixty years after Understanding Media, Marshall McLuhan remains one of the best known and most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century. Far beyond academia, readers (and non-readers) recognize his coinages, such as 'the Gutenberg era', the 'global village' and 'the medium is the message'. A literary scholar by profession, McLuhan was one of the first academics to recognize the new opportunities offered by radio and television to reach audiences beyond the readerships of scholarly journals. His talks and appearances ushered in public intellectual debate concerning the 'electronic age'. Although his reputation waned in the 1970s, the recent making-available to the public of his extraordinary personal library of some six thousand books enables new kinds of analyses of McLuhan as a reader, thinker, and cultural force. The essays here focus not so much on his media theory per se as on the habits and practices that animated his reading, and on the larger questions of what reading and not reading mean. We don't need to agree with everything McLuhan says to make valuable use of his work. New resources offer us an unprecedented opportunity to revisit one fallible human reader whose texts and ideas are good to think with (and against). This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal, Textual Practice.

絵文字は語る-ソーシャル・メディアでのコミュニケーションと行動
Kiaer, Jieun, Emoji Speak: Communication and Behaviours on Social Media. 240 pp. 2023:6 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <690-965>
ISBN 978-1-350-13511-6 hard ¥27,483.- (税込) GB£ 95.00 *

Providing an in-depth discussion of emoji use in a global context, this volume presents the use of emoji as a hugely important facet of computer-mediated communication, leading author Jieun Kiaer to coin the term 'emoji speak'. Exploring why and how emojis are born, and the different ways in which people use them, this book highlights the diversity of emoji speak. Presenting the results of empirical investigations with participants of British, Belgian, Chinese, French, Japanese, Jordanian, Korean, Singaporean, and Spanish backgrounds, it raises important questions around the complexity of emoji use. Though emojis have become ubiquitous, their interpretation can be more challenging. What is humorous in one region, for example, might be considered inappropriate or insulting in another. Whilst emoji use can speed up our communication, we might also question whether they convey our emotions sufficiently. Moreover, far from belonging to the youth, people of all ages now use emoji speak, prompting Kiaer to consider the future of our communication in an increasingly digital world.

Brown, Kenon A. / Dickhaus, Joshua / Anderson, Mia Long, The United States of Sport: Media Framing and Influence of the Intersection of Sports and American Culture. (Communication, Sport, and Society 8) 244 pp. 2022:11 (P. Lang, SZ) <690-987>

ISBN 978-1-4331-8173-3 paper ¥11,088.- (税込) SFR 42.00

Whether it’s the Roosevelt administration’s impact on the formation of the NCAA, the protest of the Vietnam War by Muhammad Ali, or the rise of rap and hip-hop in the 90s and its penetration of the NBA’s image, American culture and politics have intersected regularly with sports. The impact of American politics and culture on the sports industry, and vice versa, is evident throughout the halls of history and, in particular, the 20th and 21st centuries mark an interesting period of time to explore this relationship. One avenue to be considered during this time is the amplification and growth of mass media and its role in framing these intersections of American pop culture, politics and the sports industry. Many of the values that Americans hold dear to their identity, such as activism and protest, capitalism, freedom of expression, and competition, are permeated through the history of collegiate and professional sports in the United States, and the media has played a role in shaping those opinions and values among Americans through its various outlets. The United States of Sport looks at how media outlets portrayed several of these intersections in politics, culture and sports, with each chapter highlighting a moment or phenomenon in American history and its direct or indirect impact on some aspect of the sports industry through the eyes of newspapers, magazines, television, radio and online news outlets.

Day, Katherine, Publishing Contracts and the Post Negotiation Space: Lifting the Lid on Publishing's Black Box of Aspirations, Laws and Money. 208 pp. 2023:3 (Routledge, UK) <690-6>
ISBN 978-1-032-37353-9 hard ¥37,609.- (税込) GB£ 130.00 *
ISBN 978-1-032-37352-2 paper ¥10,700.- (税込) GB£ 36.99 *

Many writers dream of having their work published by a respected publishing house, but don't always understand publishing contract terms - what they mean for the contracting parties and how they inform book-publishing practice. In turn, publishers struggle to satisfy authors' creative expectations against the industry's commercial demands. This book challenges our perceptions of these author-publisher power imbalances by recasting the publishing contract as a cultural artefact capable of adapting to the industry's changing landscape. Based on a three-year study of publishing negotiations, Katherine Day reveals how relational contract theory provides possibilities for future negotiations in what she describes as a 'post negotiation space'.Drawing on the disciplines of cultural studies, law, publishing studies and cultural sociology, this book reveals a unique perspective from publishing professionals and authors within the post negotiation space, presenting the editor as a fundamental agent in the formation and application of publishing's contractual terms.

Bruni, Domenico Maria (ed.), Media, Power and Public Opinion: Essays on Communication and Politics in a Historical Perspective. 232 pp. 2022:10 (P. Lang, SZ) <690-701>
ISBN 978-2-87574-562-0 paper ¥15,312.- (税込) SFR 58.00

This book aims at exploring in a long historical perspective and in a wide historical context the reactions of political institutions and players towards new media and new forms of communication, as well as their strategies in order to combat and/or exploit their effects and potential. This is an original and innovative attempt to combine traditional approaches to the history of the media and politics with studies that aim to directly provide some historical perspective on contemporary preoccupations with ‘fake news’ and manipulation of public opinion. Addressing these topics by focusing on specific events and specific contexts as case studies allows us to connect the hic et nunc dimension with the general trend of the history and verify the particular effects of general long-term trends.

韓国のウェブトゥーン文化を理解する
Jin, Dal Yong, Understanding Korean Webtoon Culture: Transmedia Storytelling, Digital Platforms, and Genres. (Harvard East Asian Monographs) 250 pp. 2022:11 (Harvard Univ. Asia Center, US) <690-817>
ISBN 978-0-674-29131-7 hard ¥9,504.- (税込) US$ 45.00 *
ISBN 978-0-674-29132-4 paper ¥5,280.- (税込) US$ 25.00 *

Webtoons-a form of comic that are typically published digitally in chapter form-are the latest manifestation of the Korean Wave of popular culture that has increasingly caught on across the globe, especially among youth. Originally distributed via the Internet, they are now increasingly distributed through smartphones to ravenous readers in Korea and around the world. The rise of webtoons has fundamentally altered the Korean cultural market due to the growth of transmedia storytelling-the flow of a story from the original text to various other media platforms, such as films, television, and digital games-and the convergence of cultural content and digital technologies. Fans can enjoy this content anytime and anywhere, either purely as webtoons or as webtoon-based big-screen culture.Understanding Korean Webtoon Culture analyzes webtoons through the lens of emerging digital cultures and discusses relevant cultural perspectives by combining two different, yet connected approaches, political economy and cultural studies. The book demonstrates the dynamics between structural forces and textual engagement in global media flows, and it illuminates snack-culture and binge-reading as two new forms of digital culture that webtoon platforms capitalize on to capture people's shifting media consumption.

Joseph, Suad (ed.), Reporting Islam: Muslim Women in the New York Times, 1979-2011. (Gender and Islam) 216 pp. 2023:1 (I. B. Tauris, UK) <690-862>
ISBN 978-0-7556-4783-5 hard ¥26,037.- (税込) GB£ 90.00 *

Reporting Islam examines the coverage of Muslim women in the New York Times from 1979-2011. The analysis addresses the nature of the coverage; whether there are parallels in the depiction of Muslim women from the Middle East and South Asia and with the US government policies toward these countries; and the relationship between feminism in the US and the representation of Muslim women in the US. At a time when women often become the iconic representatives of their nations, their cultures and their religions, this book offers unique insight into how a dramatic period of contemporary history for the Middle East and South Asia was depicted by the leading print newspaper in the world. The coverage captures the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the rise of Islamist movements across the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa, the first Gulf War, the 9/11 events, the second Gulf War, the War on Terror, and the Arab uprisings. The book asks critical questions about the wider implications of the misrepresentation of Muslim women in the media, and the links between print news, US foreign policy and women.

Morris, Carl, Muslims Making British Media: Popular Culture, Performance and Public Religion. (Islam of the Global West) 240 pp. 2022:12 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <690-174>
ISBN 978-1-350-26535-6 hard ¥24,590.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *

Drawing on original fieldwork, Carl Morris examines Muslim cultural production in Britain, with a focus on the performance-based entertainment industries: music, comedy, film, television and theatre. It is a seminal study that charts the growing agency and involvement of British Muslims in cultural production over the last two decades. Morris sets this discussion within the context of wider religious, social and cultural change, with important insights concerning the sociological profile, religious lives and public visibility of Muslims in contemporary Britain. Morris draws on theoretical considerations concerning the mediatization of religion and cosmopolitanization in a globally-connected world. He argues that a new generation of media-savvy and internationalist Muslim cultural producers in Britain are constructing counter narratives in the public sphere and are reshaping everyday religious lives within their own communities. This is having a profound impact upon areas that range from Islamic authority and religious practice, to political and public debate, and understandings of Muslim identity and belonging.

Cronin, Anne M., Secrecy in Public Relations, Mediation and News Cultures: The Shadow World of the Media Sphere. (Routledge Focus on Media and Cultural Studies) 152 pp. 2023:1 (Routledge, UK) * paper 2024 <690-1042>

ISBN 978-1-032-43955-6 paper ¥5,782.- (税込) GB£ 19.99 *

This book investigates the relationship of secrecy as a social practice to contemporary media, news cultures and public relations.Drawing on Georg Simmel's theorisation of how secrecy produces a 'second world' alongside the 'obvious world' and creates and reshapes social relations, Anne Cronin argues for close analysis of the PR industry as a powerful vector of secrecy and an examination of its relationship to news cultures. Using case studies and in-depth interviews, as well as recent research in media and cultural studies, sociology, journalism studies and communication studies, the book analyses how PR practices generate a second, shadow world of the media sphere which has a profound impact on the 'obvious world'. It interrogates both the PR industry's and news culture's role in shaping social relations for a digital media landscape, and those initiatives promoting transparency of data and decision-making processes. An insightful, interdisciplinary approach to debates on media and power, this book will appeal to students of public relations, sociology, media studies, cultural studies and communication studies. It will also be of interest to scholars and practitioners working at the intersections of media, social relations and public trust.

Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) aims to enhance our understanding of how discourse figures in social processes, social structures, and social change. This book is in response to specific changes in mediation technologies of discourse, brought about by the significant concentration of discursive practices within the paradigm of social media communication. This book addresses this participatory media context against a broadly defined tradition in CDS, its aspirations, assumptions, and critique. It views discourse as forms of structured representations across a range of modalities of communication including the emerging meaning-making artefacts and practices across social media. It aspires to provide an overview of the key considerations in doing CDS on social media spaces. The book firstly provides a set of aspiration signposting the parameters of doing social media CDS followed by critical explorations of a number of contemporary case studies of digital discourses around identity, politics and representation. It includes various social media communication including YouTube, Instagram, Wikipedia, and Twitter. The book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of linguistics, politics, sociology, communication studies, media and cultural studies, and science and technology studies. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal Critical Discourse Studies.

Luckhurst, Tim, Reporting the Second World War: The Press and the People 1939-1945. 264 pp. 2023:2 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <690-1050>
ISBN 978-1-350-14949-6 hard ¥21,697.- (税込) GB£ 75.00 *
ISBN 978-1-350-14948-9 paper ¥7,229.- (税込) GB£ 24.99 *

The decisive role of Britain's wartime newspaper journalism in shaping public opinion and government policy has been majorly overlooked. Much of the existing historiography has framed Britain's newspapers as mouthpieces of state propaganda, readily conforming to the wishes of the wartime coalition. Tim Luckhurst challenges this through an analysis of illuminating and largely forgotten controversies which underscore the function the press held as guardians of democracy and propagators of dissenting opinion in British politics and society - from the overseas evacuation of children to the Allies' carpet bombing of German cities. Reporting the Second World War is a timely and important intervention that duly recognises the place of national, regional and specialist titles in speaking truth to power in a democracy at war.

Media and Everyday Life offers an accessible overview for students of media, communication and cultural studies looking to explore how modern-day media practices impact on the experience of everyday life, making this the essential companion to introductory media studies courses. This innovative introduction to media studies challenges conventional accounts of what media do to people - focusing instead on what people do with media in the course of everyday life. By rejecting the conventional media studies approach, the book provides a fresh way of thinking about media cultures and provokes thought into how media influences daily social norms. Each chapter offers a broad discussion of various facets of media, such as technology, social media and industries. Key trends and traditions are also considered, helping to define how media has become so entwined in the everyday experience. This second edition has been thoroughly updated to incorporate all the recent developments in media including new social media platforms, new technologies like wearables and smart speakers, and the spread of algorithms into so much of the media we encounter every day. The second edition also takes stock of the environmental impact of digital media and its hidden infrastructures, as well our engagement with social issues and movements from Black Lives Matter to Extinction Rebellion.

An Introduction to Global Media for the Twenty-First Century provides a thorough introduction to the field of global media today. The book presents the key changes taking place as the global media landscape evolves, and the main theories of the field, that explain these developments. Tracing, first, the formative development of an international and global media landscape throughout the 20th century from the telegraph, television and film export, and transnational television to the Internet, the book then focuses on developments in the 21st century. This includes: the digitization of the global media and communications sector; the popularization of the Internet and digital infrastructure such as the smartphone and platforms; the emergence of global online media and services; the production and distribution of digital media content; and the exploitation of user data. Case studies illustrate key developments throughout the book. The book shows how the field is characterized by a continuity of critical concerns in relation to power, influence, and domination; media user empowerment and exploitation; and social and sustainable development and democratic conditions, as well as geopolitical shifts, in a global context.
