Castro, Vic / Kiersey, Nicholas (eds.), The World Politics of Disco Elysium. (Popular Culture and World Politics) 300 pp. 2025:6 (Routledge, UK) <746-975>
ISBN 978-1-032-58363-1 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

The World Politics of Disco Elysium analyses the distinctive political claims and original arguments on a wide range of international political issues of the highly-acclaimed Marxist video game Disco Elysium (2019), which takes place in a speculative fictional world anchored in a post-Soviet Estonian perspective.Disco Elysium (2019) has been repeatedly acclaimed as one of the best video games of all time. This detective role-playing game unfolds in a city ruined by a failed communist revolution and occupied by a foreign coalition. Furthering recent work in International Relations and popular culture, this book claims that the 'cognitive estrangement' of speculative fiction can produce theoretical and political novelty, beyond merely reflecting existing political dynamics. By placing a metaphor for the Estonian capital Tallinn at the centre of a world, Disco Elysium produces an estranged Estonian perspective on world politics that challenges dominant Anglo-American views of International Relations, while also undermining the opposition between a coherent West and a colonized Rest. The contributors, from International Relations and Cultural Studies, discuss the game's claims on topics such as capitalism, (neo)liberalism, foreign intervention, law enforcement, fascism, colonialism, gender, disability, violence, memory, revolutionary politics, the European Union, political realism, and international security. The World Politics of Disco Elysium will be of great interest to students and scholars researching the politics of popular culture, post-Soviet politics, non-Western International Relations, as well as game studies and cultural studies.

Baglama, Sercan Hamza, Contemporary Refugee Literature: Syria and Beyond. (Routledge Literary Studies in Social Justice) 184 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK)
ISBN 978-1-032-75631-8 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

In the twenty-first century, millions have been forcibly displaced due to ethno-religious conflicts, socio-political instability, and economic crises, turning migration into a global phenomenon. The traumatic realities of refugees - imprisonment, torture, loss, discrimination, and marginalisation - have increasingly become subjects of academic inquiry across multiple disciplines. Literature has also played a crucial role in representing these complexities, and offered fictionalised accounts of refugee experiences before, during, and after migration. This book critically examines contemporary refugee narratives, and highlights their potential to universalise the refugee experience. It argues that while contemporary refugee literature challenges dominant representations and reclaims subjectivity, it is also shaped by the Western literary marketplace, which refashions displacement into marketable narratives of resilience and redemption, tempering its radical potential and framing it within apolitical humanitarian discourse that prioritises empathy over structural critique. The book calls for refugee narratives to resist market-driven expectations and assert their own modes of storytelling.

Bogel, Fredric V., A Theory of Metaphor: Truth, Falsity, and the Uncanny. 130 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK)

ISBN 978-1-032-90900-4 paper ¥11,084.- (税込) GB£ 39.99

A Theory of Metaphor: Truth, Falsity, and the Uncanny is a strikingly original analysis of metaphor. Scholarly and imaginative, this sophisticated theory builds on a simple definition: metaphors are not comparisons but statements of identity (A is B), statements simultaneously true and false.Bogel explores a broad range of literary theory and philosophy: from Aristotle to Zizek, Augustine to Wittgenstein, Richards to Ricoeur and Blumenberg. The book analyzes a wide variety of literary and non-literary texts, including popular forms such as graveyard epitaphs, sermons, cartoons (Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury), and a haunting episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It extends the central concept of truth and falsity to the reader's encounter with metaphor, figural interpretation of scripture, entire poems as metaphors, the aesthetics of obliquity and textual impurity, and Freudian psychoanalysis--in particular, links between metaphor and the uncanny. This rigorously and eloquently argued book will be invaluable to students of metaphor across such fields as literary criticism and theory, philosophy, linguistics, rhetoric, psychoanalysis, and media studies. Its arguments are enriched by numerous concrete examples and analyses that bring theory to life and help to reach beyond an academic audience. Bogel's ground-breaking study takes our understanding of metaphor in new and important directions.

Postmodern modes of writing have contributed to a rich tradition of innovative and memorable British fiction in the period stretching from the late twentieth century to the present day. Postmodernism has been dismissed as introspective or ahistorical, but its British incarnation demonstrates how compassionate, political, and socially conscious it can be. This volume provides fresh, accessible readings of the most influential examples of postmodern British fiction - and work by more recent, post-millennial writers working in its slipstream. It plots its emergence, reassesses its highpoint in the 1980s and 1990s, and delineates its legacy in the twenty-first century. A valuable resource for students, researchers, and the general reader, this Companion provides powerful critical frameworks to understand its geographies; its relationship to North American postmodernism; its renovation of literary forms such as the romance, speculative fiction, and the historical novel; and its vibrant engagements with race, gender, sexuality, and questions of national identity.

ISBN 978-1-032-93722-9 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Children's Boards in Museums outlines the innovative concept of a "Children's Board", in which children actively participate in a museum by sharing perspectives that expand the typical circle of voices and decision-makers.Drawing on research conducted with children between the ages of seven and 12 from diverse socio-economic contexts, and cultures over the last decade, the author presents some of the most inspiring examples of children-centered museums around the world. The book describes the many ways in which children can improve the museum, explaining how they can help to transform it into a friendlier place that is closer to the needs of the community, more respectful of nature, and capable of listening to and valuing every visitor. The book offers an innovative way of thinking about children in museums and explains how children's participation in areas of the museum that have otherwise been considered exclusive to its staff - such as strategy, human resources, funding, management, and evaluation - can enhance those areas, making the museum a significantly better place.Children's Boards in Museums is essential reading for academics and students who are engaged in the study of museums, heritage, culture and children. It will also be of interest to professionals who are looking to facilitate a new kind of relationship between their institution and the children who visit it.

Stone, Bryan P., Christianity and Horror Cinema. (Routledge Studies in Religion and Film) 320 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-158>
ISBN 978-1-032-96840-7 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Christianity and Horror Cinema explores ways that Christian beliefs, spiritualities, practices, and symbols provide the religious and existential 'depths' out of which the monsters of Western horror cinema have emerged, arguing that they are, in several respects, the monsters for which Christians are responsible. Horror cinema preys on Christianity's narrative, moral, cultural, and aesthetic traditions, reverses them, upends them, inverts them, and offends them. But it also reflects and relies on them. The book focuses on seven subgenres in the cinema of horror: ghosts, witches, the demonic or Satanic, vampires, nature horror, zombies, and psychological horror. Each chapter traces the history of that subgenre, taking up a theological analysis of ways that horror cinema capitalizes on ambiguities, contradictions, anxieties, and tensions in Christianity-for example, its treatment of the body, nature, sexuality, women, or those it deems pagan or religiously 'other.' The author examines a variety of films that are important for thinking about the relationship of Christianity to horror cinema. The book will be of interest to scholars of religion, theology, and film studies.

Reed, Adolph, Jr. / Warren, Kenneth W., Black Studies, Cultural Politics, and the Evasion of Inequality: The Farce this Time. 306 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <746-1265>

These historically grounded essays by Adolph Reed, Jr. and Kenneth W. Warren incorporate essential historical, contemporary and literary perspectives on Black cultural criticism to explore the full portrait of racial injustice and inequality in America.Taking up such topics as the evolving politics of New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina and novels by Toni Morrison and Colson Whitehead, this book engages with Black Radical Tradition, Afropessimism, antiblackness, race reductionism, and other key theories and concepts in contemporary black studies. Challenging the prevailing assertion that longstanding white animus against nonwhite peoples sufficiently and adequately explains deepening injustice past injustice or present inequality, the essays argue that such thinking fails to fully explain America's past and leaves us ill-equipped to handle the continuing challenges in the present.Tracing black cultural criticism across the 19th , 20th and 21 centuries, this book will appeal to students, scholars and researchers of Black studies, race and ethnic studies, contemporary and Black American literature.

Samardzija, Zoran, Negative Aesthetics and Political Collapse in Eastern European and Balkan Cinema. (Routledge Advances in Film Studies) 176 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1266>
ISBN 978-1-032-81995-2 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Negative Aesthetics and Political Collapse in Eastern European and Balkan Cinema examines the theme of political collapse in select contemporary Eastern European and Balkan art cinema and documentaries from the late eighties to the present.Engaging with debates in Marxism and contemporary film theory about political aesthetics, the book centres around the question of whether we can imagine possible futures through negative aesthetics which are skeptical of cinema's ability to reproduce reality in a comprehensive and unmediated manner. In particular, it analyzes examples of ambiguous art cinema and related hybrid documentary modes in order to invite spectators to rethink how we understand and represent the unique experiences of living through the collapse of authoritarian communism and the transition to neoliberal capitalism. Negative Aesthetics and Political Collapse ultimately argues that the skepticism about political change and representing history found in these films form an original mode of utopian thinking. In other words, their negativity about their own artistic autonomy is the very thing that allows them to hint at possible futures that are unpresentable because they exist outside of the frameworks of contemporary geopolitics and our dominant understandings of cinematic aesthetics.Redefining how we understand the intersections between geopolitics, art cinema aesthetics, and film theory, the book presents a unique synthesis of film and political theory that attempts a new understanding of cinematic aesthetics. As such, it will interest scholars of film theory, global art cinema aesthetics, regional studies of Eastern Europe and the Balkans, and political science.

Szczepaniak, Jacek / Czachorowska, Magdalena (eds.), Emotions across Languages and Media: Linguistic and Cultural Studies Analyses. (E-Figurationen. Schriften zur interdisziplinaren Emotionsforschung 4) VI, 312 S. 2025:2 (O. Harrassowitz, GW) <746-1270>
ISBN 978-3-447-12345-7 paper ¥15,857.- (税込) EUR 68.00

Emotions are with us all the time: without them it is difficult to talk about human beings, their condition, their motivations, their past and their future. Emotions are present in education, socialization, politics, culture and nature. To experience them is to experience life. It is therefore that they attract the interest of researchers in various anthropologically oriented disciplines. The question of the possibility of a scientific description of inner states runs through the entire history of research on emotions. There have been countless more or less scientifically based attempts to define them as physiological, behavioral and/or cognitive entities, i.e., complex phenomena at the interface between mind and body, nature and culture. However, emotions are complex, multidimensional phenomena with biological, psychological, and social substrates. They do not exclusively affect the body. As discursive constructs, they can also be symbolic and relate to social contexts. The wealth of stimulating research on emotions is the inspiration for the anthology edited by Jacek Szczepaniak and Magdalena Czachorowska dedicated to the complex and reciprocal relationships between emotions, language(s) and media. On the one hand it is an attempt to draw on the experience of emotion research and, on the other, to provide linguists, literary scholars and cultural scientists with their own interpretative tools. The research focuses on issues related to the representation, concealment and emphasis of emotions in languages as diverse as Arabic, Chinese, German, Polish, Russian and Latin. Each analysis brings to light aspects that are specific to particular cultural groups, but also reveals intercultural transfers, updates through the mediation and politicization of discourses and changes that result from the practical application of knowledge about emotions.

Terrill, Robert E., Tricksters of Gotham: The Joker, The Batman, and The Christopher Nolan Trilogy. (Routledge Studies in Rhetoric and Communication) 208 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1271>
ISBN 978-1-041-01593-2 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Tricksters of Gotham explores the 'trickster' tale through an in-depth look at Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. The trickster figure is an ancient and variable figure, versions of which populate the myths and folklore of many human cultures worldwide. Conceptualising the trilogy as a single aggregate text with a clear narrative arc, the author explores the variety of trickster figures present in the films and draws clear parallels with the surrounding social and political context. Departing from the central argument that the Batman trilogy shows a variety of trickster characters, even Batman himself, this book shows contemporary trickster figures to be rich and relevant cultural resources that can focus our attention on those elements of the social order that have become too rigid, hierarchical, or exclusionary. The author argues that they can model tactics for engaging with tricksters when they inevitably arise in civic culture, offering insights about how to manage interactions with these figures who can be both productively disruptive and potentially destructive. This book pays close attention to the characters portrayed in the Nolan Batman trilogy -- not only the Batman and the Joker, but the more minor characters as well -- to discover what trickster-like tactics they may offer. In this way, the book intends to render these films as a sort of equipment for civic life, and to encourage similar analyses of other contemporary cultural artifacts.Through close readings of these films, the book renders the Nolan Batman trilogy as what rhetorical theorist Kenneth Burke refers to as "equipment for living." This book will interest scholars and students of rhetoric and public culture, film studies and communication.

ISBN 978-1-032-95558-2 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book focuses on the cinema of the 1950s in India and analyses the work of seven filmmakers from mainstream Hindi cinema and how they responded to the independent Indian nation after 1947.The selection of key filmmakers instead of cinema in general shows individual trajectories within cinema. The book examines the change in preoccupations or representations in the work of a single filmmaker, followed by an interpretation about the meaning of those representations. The filmmakers were very prolific and their work was commercially successful. Each chapter studies five or six selected films of each filmmaker and also include some relevant biographical details. The book demonstrates that each filmmaker uses their own strategies to address independent India of the 1950s and how Hindu cinema interrogated the nation-state.A novel contribution to Indian cinema, especially Hindi cinema, during formative years of the 1950s, this book will be of interest to researchers in Film Studies, Gender Studies, Political Science and History, as well as South Asian society and culture.

ISBN 978-1-5296-6781-3 hard ¥37,422.- (税込) GB£ 135.00

The Sage Handbook of Decolonial Theory is a pioneering resource that expands the epistemological and geographical horizons of decolonial thought. This handbook prioritizes the Global South, fostering North-South and South-South inter-epistemic dialogues and situating decolonial thought in sites of struggle. It builds on a foundation of Black, Indigenous, and campesino decolonial thought and praxis from regions such as Chile, Colombia, Brazil, and Guatemala. Addressing the erasure of knowledge production from the Global South in dominant academic spaces, this handbook brings together decolonial scholars and activist intellectuals from the Global South and engages with scholars in the Global North. It emphasizes the ethics of knowledge production and the importance of collaborative projects with marginalized regions and communities. Organized into five parts, the handbook includes conceptual essays and empirical studies on decolonial thought and praxis. It covers a range of topics from (de)coloniality, geopolitics, and transdisciplinarity to decolonial feminist, gender, and sexuality studies, racial capitalism, and Pan-Africanism. The chapters convey a sense of urgency and a committed political voice, demonstrating how decolonial theory can interrogate and intervene in the modern/colonial racial capitalist heteropatriarchal world. The Sage Handbook of Decolonial Theory is not just for academics; it is written for anyone interested in radical thought and praxis. It recognizes decolonial theory as a plural and dynamic field, concerned with power relations, historiographical interventions, and epistemological critiques of Eurocentrism. Ultimately, it teaches us how to think with and act alongside others in the struggle for liberation. Part I: Key Debates in Decolonial Theory Part II: Geopolitics and Geographies Part III: Transdisciplinarity Part IV: Feminisms, Genders, & Sexualities Part V: Racial Capitalism

Walsh, Joanna, Amateurs!: How We Built Internet Culture and Why it Matters. 288 pp. 2025:9 (Verso, UK) <746-1230>
ISBN 978-1-83976-539-1 paper ¥5,540.- (税込) GB£ 19.99

Amateurs! is the story of how YOU created internet culture and why it matters. Web 2.0 invited users to create: blogs, vlogs, tweets, memes and more. For the first time in history, art became *the* fundamental form of communication. What started as fun became a currency--vital for finding friends, work and love--then, as meatspace job security eroded, work. Now an internet presence is no longer optional, platforms increasingly charge for use, selling our creations back to us. Whatever we're making online, it isn't amateur any more.If creative acts online have facilitated AI's environmental impact, alt-right politics, neoliberal economics, they are also at the heart of effective activism, community-building, political solidarities. What we make online is political, not only in content but because it's here in this public forum, because so much of it comes from people who never had a voice in any public forum before. An aesthetic revolution as big as modernism, internet amateurism has changed how we think, talk about and see our world. It asks us to re-evaluate not only what art, and what an artist is, but the divide between the amateur and professional itself.

ISBN 978-1-032-95516-2 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Positioning the teen girl as a figure possessing exceptional power with the potential to instigate change, this book examines the "extra-ordinary" girl as she exists under neoliberalism today.Through a combination of textual and cultural analyses of figurations of girlhood in popular culture, and qualitative research group interviews with teen girls, the author emphasizes the importance of listening to real teen girls whose perspectives and values might not match those attributed to dominant cultural models of girlhood. The book explores contemporary girl figures and figurations of girlhood, on and off screen, highlighting how girls who are not in the public eye negotiate standards of exceptionality in relation to their own experiences of social power, while also defining the importance of care and connection to their relationships and personal values. This book is a unique and comprehensive combination of methodological and conceptual approaches to cultural, historical and sociological analyses, while exploring questions of feminism and the speculative fiction genre. It will appeal to girlhood and feminist studies, film & media studies, child and youth studies, humanities, cultural studies and social sciences.

ISBN 978-1-032-61532-5 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book explores evocations of and allusions to sexual desire in Soviet cinema, 1919-1991.By deploying several lines of investigation - from the cult of the masculine, strong body in Stalinist cinema to the shifting signification of the naked body (male and female) in post-war cinema, and to the display of a sexualised body in the late Soviet era - the book establishes the extent to which Soviet cinema actually did reveal sexuality. It also explores how external political and social factors impacted representation. Overall, the contributions challenge the narrative of Soviet cinema as an art form where the representation of sexuality was taboo and outlines shifts in the concepts of the naked and sexualised body, of sexuality and sexual relationships. This book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of film studies, Slavic and Soviet studies, cultural studies, politics, and gender studies.

Humour in Times of Confrontation: 1901 to the Present examines the various and surprising ways in which humour has been powerfully employed, through a wider range of media than possible at any other time in history, as a response to conflict. With no earlier century undergoing more diverse, more extensive, and more intense conflicts than the period in question, the last twelve decades provide a unique landscape to explore the farthest edge of humour: its darkest side. This book argues that such conflict has not only traumatically shaped the modern psyche but created a fertile ground for humour to grow and evolve with the advent of new representations and technologies. The chapters in this volume focus on international conflicts that have been reported widely through news media but seldom regarded as material for serious humour studies. Each chapter begins by engaging with a particular form of confrontation before providing a case study of how it has contributed to the creation, enjoyment, and/or sharing of humour via different media. This volume is a valuable resource to students and scholars of humour studies, modern cultural and social history, the history of technology, and media studies.

Cheung, Ruby / Hill, John / Kawashima, Nobuko et al. (eds.), Global Film Policies: New Perspectives. (Routledge Studies in Media and Cultural Industries) 224 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1240>

Global Film Policies challenges conventional analyses of film policy as a stand-alone public policy confined within national boundaries, and usually focused on supports for film production. The book argues for a more multi-faceted approach, extending beyond national boundaries, and broadening its scope to recognise how other forms of policy pertain to film, including tax, labour, language, and education.A team of experts in various areas of film and media studies critically analyse specific areas of film policy and engage with other public policy programmes, related concepts and/or phenomena. Each chapter brings together a general discussion of the conceptual and critical issues at stake, with specific references to particular territorial or historical contexts, institutions and policy initiatives that illuminate the more general issues. Case studies from different continents illustrate how film-related policies work with other public policies to maintain their influence not just on the film sector but also society more generally. This book will be an important resource for scholars and students studying global film policy in the areas of film, media or creative industries, and business.

食品と文化遺産ハンドブック
Di Giovine, Michael A. / Matta, Raul (eds.), Routledge Handbook of Food and Cultural Heritage. (Routledge International Handbooks) 490 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <746-1243>
ISBN 978-1-032-02655-8 hard ¥63,756.- (税込) GB£ 230.00

The Routledge Handbook of Food and Cultural Heritage explores the many varied intersections of food and cultural heritage from a robust, transdisciplinary perspective.Innovative in its approach, this cutting-edge Handbook thinks beyond traditional boundaries to present unique perspectives on the myriad ways in which food and cultural heritage are entangled in theory and practice. Both are growing industries; both are deeply rooted in families, cultures, and societies; both generate controversy and are deployed for political and economic activism. They also both have intellectual lives of their own, and are centers of interdisciplinary fields themselves-yet they also intersect in interesting and, until this book, under-theorized ways. After a comprehensive introduction that presents and challenges the state-of-the-art in the disciplines of critical food and critical heritage studies, the Handbook's chapters are divided into six themes common to both fields: Ontologies and epistemologies of food and cultural heritage; material culture; identity, placemaking and belonging; politics and regulation; tourism development and heritage management; and contemporary issues and emerging approaches. To give representation of voices not usually heard in the scholarly tradition, special interviews with food-and-heritage practitioners complement the comprehensive chapters, adding further depth to the volume through their own lived experiences. With contributions from nearly 50 internationally recognized scholars, social scientists, dieticians, practitioners, and activists, this book is essential reading to scholars, students, researchers, industry professionals, and practitioners looking to understand the complex and compelling ways in which food, foodways, and cultural heritage overlap and impact each other, providing venues for collaborations.

Donnels O'Malley, Lurana, Black Activists Write Wheatley and Washington: Terrell, Du Bois, and the Drama of the 1932 Bicentennial. (Routledge Advances in Theatre & Performance Studies) 290 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1244>
ISBN 978-1-032-36093-5 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

The book examines how early twentieth century Black theatre artists depicted national mythologies of the United States.White-authored pageants and plays written for the 1932 Bicentennial celebration of George Washington's birthday relegated Black Americans to the periphery through racist stereotyping. Black activists Mary Church Terrell and W. E. B. Du Bois seized the opportunity to place Black people at center stage and to revise contemporary views of Washington and of Black achievement. Terrell's The Pageant-Play of Phyllis Wheatley and Du Bois's George Washington and Black Folk dramatize how the achievements of Black men and women fit into the US origin story. The book combines O'Malley's edited versions of these two scripts with a scholarly monograph contextualizing them within the larger Bicentennial event. This edition will be the first time that Terrell's pageant, a biography of the life of the enslaved African poet Phillis Wheatley, has ever been published. Du Bois's pageant is a transgressive revision of the Washington myth. This interdisciplinary book will be a valuable resource for college and university courses in American theatre and performance studies, Black Studies, and Women's Studies, as it includes the scripts themselves, the book is particularly useful in theatre or literature classes in these subject areas.

Fennell, Christopher C. (ed.), Combating Oppression with New Commemorations. (Restorative Justice in Heritage Studies and Archaeology) 304 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1246>

Combating Oppression with New Commemorations examines the ways in which marginalized groups can confront oppressive regimes through commemorations and advocacy of their own heritage.Presenting case studies from across the globe, the volume provides invaluable insights into the diverse strategies and various disciplinary approaches being used to counter oppression through commemorations of the heritage of marginalized groups. Reminding the reader that such commemorations are often created by individuals who have directly confronted traumas of oppression, contributors emphasize that their survivance, successes, and vitality are tributes to human resilience and creativity. Chapters also demonstrate how such commemorations can advance recognition of the group's diverse legacies and cultural identity and help enhance social and economic equities for that population across local, regional, and national scales. It is also made clear that they can provide resources for reconciliation negotiations with other social collectives who seek to oppress the marginalized group. These dynamics can facilitate truth-telling, accountability, recovery of unrecorded histories, revitalization, increments of healing, and efforts to avoid future repetitions of past and present social traumas.Combating Oppression with New Commemorations will be essential reading for academics, and students working in heritage studies, archaeology, anthropology, material culture studies, landscape analysis, and museum studies. It will also be of great interest to practitioners and activists around the world.

ISBN 978-1-032-16947-7 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This volume focuses on the interplay between metaphor, making and mysticism and sheds new light on the power of the metaphorical and creative dimensions of the mystical for the twenty-first century. It explores the ways a variety of mystical writers deal with metaphor and image by bringing together chapters from interdisciplinary vantage points - theological, philosophical, historical, artistic, and literary. The book touches on a range of historical and contemporary figures, including Jalal al-Din al-Rumi, John of Ruusbroec, Hadewijch, John Scottus Eriugena and Edward Abbey. In reviewing the place of metaphor in mystical texts (both Christian and Islamic) the contributions reflect on the hard and difficult places both metaphor and mysticism can bring us to. They explore contemporary artists' engagement with the mystical, and how these open up new ways of reimagining our present - moving us beyond static categories such as religion vs. secular, and Christianity vs. Islam. Overall, the book highlights the potential of mysticism to push us beyond comfortable spaces and associations, and considers the language and images used to do so.

In this third edition of the classic cultural history of black women's beauty, Venus in the Dark: Blackness and Beauty in Popular Culture, Janell Hobson explores the enduring figure of the "Hottentot Venus" and the history of critical and artistic responses to her by black women in contemporary photography, film, literature, music, and dance. In 1810, Sara Baartman was taken from South Africa to Europe, where she was put on display at circuses, salons, museums, and universities as the "Hottentot Venus." The subsequent legacy of representations of black women's sexuality-from Josephine Baker to Serena Williams to hip-hop and dancehall videos, to our favorite pop acts including Beyonce, Rihanna, and Megan Thee Stallion -refer back to her iconic image. Via a new preface, Hobson explores the continuing influence of Baartman's legacy through the contemporary marketization of black women's bodies; from popular music and pornography to advertising and presidential campaigns. A brand-new chapter analyzes fetishistic spectacles of the black "booty," with particular emphasis on the rise in cosmetic surgeries, such as BBLs, and the different ways that twenty-first-century subjects have reshaped and redefined their bodies in an emergent global body politic. This new edition of Venus in the Dark: Blackness and Beauty in Popular Culture is essential reading for students and researchers, as well those outside of academia interested in the subjects of black women and their beautification efforts.

The theory and practice of propaganda are of increasing interest in this century, as authoritarian regimes make growing use of it. This anthology compiles the author's recent articles on film propaganda. The book begins by presenting a clear and concise theory of propaganda, explaining how it can be rational though it rarely is. It then focuses specifically on propaganda in film. The anthology discusses various films, evaluating their rationality and the effectiveness of counterarguments against them. It covers a wide range of propaganda films, from The Birth of a Nation (1915) to some contemporary films, including two featured on HBO and Netflix, along with the ways their critics have effectively countered them.

ISBN 978-1-032-88294-9 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Videogames and Metareference is the first edited collection to investigate the rise of metareference in videogames from an interdisciplinary perspective.Bringing together a group of distinguished scholars from various geographic and disciplinary backgrounds, the book combines in-depth theoretical reflection with a diverse selection of case studies in order to explore how metareference manifests itself in and around a broad range of videogames (from indie to AAA), while also asking what cultural work the videogames in question accomplish in the process. The carefully curated chapters not only provide much-needed expansions and revisions of a concept that was at least initially derived mainly from literary studies but also cover a broad range of videogame genres, discuss the evolution of metareference across videogame history as well as the functions it fulfils in different sociocultural contexts, and scrutinize metareferential elements and examples that have hitherto received little attention. This book with its interdisciplinary scope will appeal to scholars and students within game studies and game design as well as, more broadly, scholars and students within literary studies, media studies, popular culture studies, and digital culture studies.

Everybody has a story in them. Some people lack the language and the tools to tell that story effectively. As an avid Tabletop Role-Playing Game player, I'm amazed at people's ability to tell stories on the spot. Both the players and the game master are creating worlds in their minds and playing out the events, using improv, in real-time. Being an author and screenwriter, I know how difficult it is to create consistent and well-constructed characters, themes, and conflicts. I believe that storytellers looking to level up in the classroom, their hobby, or career could learn a lot from games like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and others. This book seeks to give people the tools and language to create and master their worlds and characters, using TTRPG mechanics and rulesets as foundational elements. This book will contain insights and interviews from some of today's most respected game masters, players, actual play actors, and we'll also hear from some of the people behind the scenes responsible for creating these games, and how they view worldbuilding and storytelling for their audiences.

Kinaesthetic Empathy, Ethics and Care develops a philosophy of dance that highlights the psychological, aesthetic and ethical significance of dancer-viewer interaction in the moment of performance.Leroy draws on phenomenology, psychoanalysis, dance studies and care ethics to analyse kinaesthetic empathy as a form of intersubjective performance. She shows how, in the contagion or interweaving between corporealities of dancer and viewer, each party supports or upholds the other in a process of mutual care. Dance movement involves a play with gravity which alleviates the weight of repressed desire and redefines the contours of the body image, facilitating psychological self-repair. Through projection into the body of another, we can develop our independence and autonomy as subjects, even in the midst of relational being. Richly illustrated with theatre dance examples, Leroy's argument develops a corporeal basis for ethics and reveals how a return to the moving body through dance helps lay the foundations for a more humane society. The book will interest philosophers, dance researchers, care ethicists and care practitioners, as well as advanced students in these fields and general readers curious about the aesthetic and ethical potency of theatre dance.

Evans, Jonathan / Choi, Jinsil / Kim, Kyung Hye (eds.), Translating and Receiving Korean Media: From Squid Game to Life on Mars. (The Korean Wave in Translation) 160 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1053>
ISBN 978-1-032-97476-7 hard ¥40,194.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

In recent years, Korean culture has been incredibly successful internationally, from the films of auteur directors like Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite) to shows like Squid Game and K-pop music. At the same time, media from the UK has also been successful in South Korea, with popular shows such as Killing Eve and Life on Mars. Written by scholars working across translation studies, film and media studies, this volume examines the ways in which Korean media has been received and translated in the UK, as well as how British media has fared in South Korea. Case studies explore how Korean media is (re)packaged and categorised for a Western audience, and how paratextual material (trailers, adverts, fan reactions) mediates films and shows for international audiences. The book also examines how the Korean remake of Life on Mars localises the British show, how Squid Game has been audio-described, and how slower media models can suggest more sustainable forms of consumption and distribution. Demonstrating how interdisciplinary research can shed light on different aspects of global media culture, this volume will be essential reading for scholars and students working on the translation and international media circulation. It will especially appeal to readers interested in the interactions between British and Korean media. This work was supported by the Fund for International Collaboration and the Economic and Social Research Council [grant number ES/W01081X/1].
