Godfrey, Phoebe / Galilea, Ordoitz (eds.), Social Theories for the Anthropocene: Diversities Across the Divides. 496 pp. 2025:11 (Routledge, UK) <750-999>
ISBN 978-1-032-57785-2 hard ¥26,287.- (税込) GB£ 92.99
ISBN 978-1-032-47312-3 paper ¥15,545.- (税込) GB£ 54.99

This unique textbook introduces undergraduate students to key social theories from classical, multicultural, global, and indigenous perspectives, while also inviting them to understand social theories as stories that create our culturally specific social realities. The readings in this collection emphasize the ways our culturally perceived social-environmental divide has historically been constructed to the detriment of both society and the environment. Social Theories for the Anthropocene offers students the theoretical tools necessary to re-imagine and re-dream. First, to re-imagine what it means to be 'human' as we culturally define it. Second, to rethink how to apply such new possibilities to the transformation of Western culture from its current self-destructive trajectory to something more equitable and more sustainable.Placing readings from classical social theory in dialogue with writings from a diverse range of modern thinkers, this timely reader will be indispensable for undergraduate students and instructors undertaking courses on social theory, the environment, climate change, and ecology.

Faber, Agoston, Pierre Bourdieu: Theory and Politics. 220 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK) <750-722>
ISBN 978-1-041-09579-8 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
ISBN 978-1-032-75255-6 paper ¥11,304.- (税込) GB£ 39.99

Pierre Bourdieu is one of the most prominent and significant figures in 20th-century sociology. His influence remains substantial even after his death in 2002, and his views and findings continue to divide sociologists to this day. This book examines the issue of Bourdieu's so-called "political turn," a significant topic in the French press and academic world. It explores whether the relationship between Pierre Bourdieu's increasingly visible political engagement from the mid-1990s and his earlier scientific work should be understood in terms of continuity or discontinuity. To investigate this specific issue, it is essential to discuss some basic concepts and significant insights of Bourdieu's social theory. The book also considers the robustness of Bourdieu's theoretical framework and his criticisms of neoliberal capitalism from the perspective of Luc Boltanski's competing pragmatic sociology. The book concludes that although Bourdieu, as a devoted left-wing intellectual, saw the possibility of resisting the neoliberal world order through mass mobilisation, inciting masses to collective action remains problematic within his sociological and anthropological framework. Through a systematic discussion of Bourdieu's theory, the book offers insights into the relationship between science and politics and hopes to provide an opportunity for a deeper understanding of his work.

Blue, Stanley, Practice Theory and Process Philosophy: Towards a Sociology of Becoming. (Routledge Studies in Social and Political Thought) 220 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK) <750-38>
ISBN 978-1-032-61040-5 hard ¥40,991.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book breaks new ground in sociological theory, presenting a process-oriented practice theory for conceptualising and studying the dynamism, interconnectedness and ongoing transformation of everyday social life. Drawing on process-inspired approaches from disciplines such as anthropology, geography and science and technology studies, it develops a framework for understanding practices not as things that change, but as ongoing processes that organise everyday life. Each chapter engages with a specific debate in practice theory, including how to conceptualise the site of the social, the status of the practitioner, how practices connect and extend across space and time, the role of memory in practice, the place of power, and appropriate methods for capturing the dynamics of social practice. In doing so, the book introduces a conceptual vocabulary for describing connection, extension, and emergence in a way that attends to the affective space of the social.Practice Theory and Process Philosophy is essential reading for scholars and students across the social sciences and humanities who are interested in practice theory, process philosophy and social theory.

ISBN 978-1-0353-1658-8 hard ¥63,607.- (税込) GB£ 225.00

A major development in psychology over the past 50 years is new knowledge about the psychological qualities humans have as social animals. People act and behave not only with respect to their individual temperament, needs, wants, and desires but are driven by collective interests-group forces that shape our world every day. In this Handbook leading experts from around the world harness advances in social psychology to illustrate what groups are, why they matter and how they function as part of our human psychology. The stakes are high as a central provocation of the Handbook is that in the face of major social, environmental and health challenges survival is dependent on the group-level of human psychology. Chapters explore how group membership and social identities are strategically chosen, mobilised, and harnessed to drive individual and societal transformation. The Handbook of Social Identity Research is an invaluable resource for those interested in the psychology of behaviour change. It will be of interest to scholars and students of social and behavioural sciences, including psychology and sociology and policy makers. Chorell, Torbjoern Gustafsson, Social Bonds and Historical Time. 184 pp. 2025:9 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <750-1051>
ISBN 978-1-350-47722-3 hard ¥24,029.- (税込) GB£ 85.00

This book analyses the social dimension of historical time, and explores how we emotionally and intellectually bind ourselves to the past, and project these ties onto our present and future.Gustafsson Chorell argues that historical time is inherently social, and that the nexus of past, present, and future is constructed through social mechanisms. Beginning with the concept of the 'historical imaginary', this book examines the theoretical shift from future-oriented to present-oriented models of time, and integrates insights from intellectual history, philosophy, and social theory. This book takes demonstrates how a variety of social bonds - such as emotion, generation, and authority - can affect how historical time is demarcated. Analysing key concepts such as 'desire' for the past, the impact of grief and nostalgia, and the role of history in shaping expectations for the future, the volume highlights the enduring significance of sociality, even under new regimes of historicity - such as the Anthropocene. Ultimately, Gustafsson Chorell offers a comprehensive view of how past, present, and future are interconnected - and highlights the continued importance of thinking carefully about the relationship between time and history.

Crul, Maurice / Lelie, Frans, Gesellschaft der Minderheiten: Leben in der Superdiversitaet. (C. H. Beck Paperback 4614) 192 S. 2025:9 (Beck, GW) <750-1052>
ISBN 978-3-406-83755-5 paper ¥3,766.- (税込) EUR 16.00

Dorado, Silvia / Haugh, H. / Wadhwani, R. D. et al. (eds.), Big Picture Approaches to the Impact of Social Innovations. (Research in the Sociology of Organizations 96) 384 pp. 2025:11 (Emerald, UK) <750-1053>
ISBN 978-1-83608-529-4 hard ¥30,769.- (税込) US$ 148.00

There is growing interest in how social innovation can help address the grand challenges of our time. In this edited collection, we recommend and discuss historical and systems perspectives as especially valuable in broadening our view of the kinds of dynamics underpinning social transformation. A historical perspective shows how past experiences, cultural narratives, and institutional legacies shape social innovation efforts. It emphasizes that transformation emerges through contested and evolving narratives rather than simple diffusion. The volume includes papers that discuss such narrative and dialectical dynamics in diverse forms and settings, such as, for example, the multi-decadal efforts to address homelessness in the United States. A systems perspective, meanwhile, highlights the social innovation implications of the interconnected and adaptive nature of social and environmental challenges. It views transformation as an emergent outcome of complex interactions across scales, emphasizing resilience and unintended consequences. Papers apply this lens, for instance, in studying shifting approaches to supporting the disabled, and we also include papers offering related principles and guidelines, as well as systems mapping advice for practitioners and scholars. The volume concludes with reflections from prominent scholars who examine definitional issues and underscore the need for Big Picture Approaches to the Impact of Social Innovations.

Duina, Francesco / Storti, Luca (eds.), The Social Acceptance of Inequality: On the Logics of a More Unequal World. 400 pp. 2025:8 (Oxford U. Pr., US) <750-1054>
ISBN 978-0-19-781449-9 hard ¥20,582.- (税込) US$ 99.00

The world has staggering levels of inequality. Most people worry about this. Some, however, accept or even approve of those inequalities. Why? The Social Acceptance of Inequality offers the first comprehensive analysis of the logics people use in support of economic inequalities. Turning to case studies from across the globe, it examines four primary logics. Market/economic logics see people accept and even approve of economic inequalities because of the positive material outcomes for societies with which they are purportedly associated. Moral logics see people thinking of inequalities as fair according to 'higher' or ethical principles, such as meritocracy. When relying on cultural/institutional logics, people view economic inequalities as consistent with established or emerging outlooks, policies, or organizational arrangements. Using group/ethnic logics, people justify inequalities on the basis of hierarchical distinctions between 'superior' and 'inferior' collectivities. These logics do not exist in isolation: they often interact with each other, and inevitably function in particular political, economic, and cultural contexts. With contributors from across the world and the social sciences, evidence comes from North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Attention goes not only to those in positions of privilege but also those in vulnerable positions who, despite their conditions, look favorably upon inequalities. With original analyses employing a wealth of methodological approaches, the book offers a compelling investigation of the logics of acceptance, their variations and intersections, and how we may move toward a less unequal world. Chapter 2 of this work is available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International open access licence. This part of the work is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations

Glaser, Vern L. / Moser, Christine et al. (eds.), Algorithmic Organizing. (Research in the Sociology of Organizations 95) 288 pp. 2025:11 (Emerald, UK) <750-1056>
ISBN 978-1-83708-929-1 hard ¥22,037.- (税込) US$ 106.00

This volume contains Open Access chapters. Bringing together cutting-edge papers, this edited volume examines the growing phenomenon of algorithmic organizing-the embedding of powerful data-driven tools into organizational structures, routines, and social practices. These technologies are fundamentally transforming organizational landscapes, raising a critical question: How are algorithmic systems reshaping work, decision-making, and the broader social order? Charting a holistic perspective on algorithmic organizing, this volume draws on multimodal inquiry and "data work", examining both the technical and sociopolitical dimensions of how organizations adopt, adapt to, and govern algorithmic tools in practice. From data scientists' improvisational craftwork and organizational readiness for algorithmic deployments, to user encounters with opaque platform logics and extreme humanitarian settings, the papers collectively illuminate how algorithms become interwoven with human expertise, professional identities, and institutional demands. Several contributions highlight the tensions that arise when algorithmic systems challenge existing norms-such as professional autonomy and regulatory compliance-underscoring the need for continuous negotiation and re-scripting of roles and responsibilities. The studies also reveal new ethical quandaries related to transparency, fairness, and accountability, pointing to complex trade-offs between efficiency gains and potential harms such as worker surveillance or bias amplification. Deepening our understanding of how algorithmic organizing is enacted and contested across diverse settings, Algorithmic Organizing offers a roadmap for future research that bridges disciplinary boundaries and highlights the social, technical, and ethical ramifications of an increasingly data-driven world.

Undertaking research with young people is an expanding approach within education, sociology, criminology, politics, youth work and psychology. This book introduces existing research methods such as interviews, focus groups, ethnography and creative methods, as well as covering newer methods including place-based methods, digital methods, co-production and co-authorship. Each thematic chapter is followed by a shorter invited case study, which puts the specific method into practice. The resulting pedagogical material gives useful practical application of that method to the field as a guide that can be followed by both students and instructors. The book supports researchers and students in doing research with young people by highlighting tensions, challenges and opportunities in research processes to involve, work with, and research youth practices, lived experiences and expertise.

Richards, Sarah / Coombs, Sarah, Researching Children and Childhoods: A Reflexive Dissertation Companion. 160 pp. 2025:7 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <750-1062>

Junior researchers in the field of childhood studies are often faced with many challenges that accompany research with young participants. Methodological concepts, such as research relationships, positionality, self-disclosure and reflexivity can sometimes become subordinate to more practical and procedural concerns. Researching Children and Childhoods frames these themes not as problems but as opportunities to deepen and strengthen research discussions and analysis. Providing students with a guide to support their ventures into research with children and young people, this book offers practical advice on writing a thesis/dissertation and will enable readers to: - confidently reflect on the ethical issues embedded in their own projects and recognise them as opportunities for discussion within their dissertations or thesis - demystify the role of methodologies and position them as essential tools for their research - consider the efficacy of concepts such as agency, autonomy, participation, subjectivity, and voice as ways of understanding childhood and children's lived experiences - use ideas such as positionality, self-disclosure and category entitlement to recognise the integral role of researcher identity and relationships in the construction of knowledge - use 'I' authoritatively when writing about their own research without reducing content to descriptive, opinion based discussions - situate their research by exploring the context in which the research takes place and the power relations embedded within participants and researcher relationships Each chapter includes a variety of researcher experiences, vignette examples, and specific activities, aimed at applying the key themes represented in this volume into research dissertations.

Spratt, Tanisha, Ungrievable Lives: Racism, Risk and Responsibility in Neoliberal Societies. 272 pp. 2026:6 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <750-1063>

ISBN 978-1-350-40080-1 paper ¥6,216.- (税込) GB£ 21.99

In this book, Tanisha Spratt offers an original and much-needed exploration of whose lives society deems grievable and why. In 2020, the global fight against COVID-19, coupled with the resurgence of Black Lives Matter (BLM) following the death of George Floyd, brought into stark clarity what many scholars and activists have long argued - that when it comes to matters of sickness and health/ life and death some lives matter and others do not. By developing Judith Butler's theory of grievability to include contemporary discussions of blame, risk, death and dying when it comes to racial disparities in health and mortality rates, Spratt calls in contemporary and historical case studies including that of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement, the war in Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic and Shamima Begum. From immigration and prison reform, medical ethics, health behaviours, and citizenship denial, Spratt demonstrates how, under neoliberalism, some lives are more valuable than others - and how racist, sexist and homophobic perceptions of value, risk and vulnerability deem some deaths less worthy of grief than others.

Storz, Cornelia / Hediger, Vinzenz / Krings, M. (eds.), Dis.Ordering Distribution: Infrastructures, Formats and Practices in the Circulation of Culture. (Research in the Sociology of Organizations 94) 196 pp. 2025:10 (Emerald, UK) <750-1064>
ISBN 978-1-83662-947-4 hard ¥25,779.- (税込) US$ 124.00

Dis.Ordering Distribution explores the intricate relationship between distribution and production, drawing on empirical evidence from two vibrant centers of cultural production: Africa and Asia. Delving into how cultural entrepreneurs engage with global distribution platforms and the resulting impact on the creation of cultural artifacts, the analysis reveals that digital platforms are not merely end-point distribution tools but are also reshaping production processes. The first section, "Infrastructures, Formats, and Rules", examines the triad of infrastructures, formats, and rules, highlighting their historical significance and their role in shaping consumer behavior through distribution platforms. The second section, "Distribution as a Force Shaping Production" focuses on memes as a case study to illustrate the close link between distribution and production and how memes as a ubiquitous element of contemporary media culture, exemplify how distribution influences production. The final section, "Cultural Entrepreneurs in the Platform Business" brings attention to the physical spaces within a platform-dominated environment. It discusses how cultural entrepreneurs, such as artists and musicians, leverage their networks and data collection methods to promote their work, emphasizing the continued importance of local production and distribution sites. This volume provides a comprehensive analysis of how digital platforms are transforming cultural production and distribution.

Westbrook, David A., Social Thought From the Ruins: Quixote's Dinner Party. (A New Order of Social Things) 224 pp. 2025:8 (Routledge, UK) <750-1065>

Through stories, conversations, and essays, this book pursues interwoven critical and philosophical inquiries into the nature of the contemporary in the North Atlantic, asking how are we to live as intellectuals, individually and in community? Social Thought From the Ruins: Quixote's Dinner Party is the product of informal discussion and academic work done over the last two decades among an international group of social scientists. An extended critique of academic life today and the context of our own thinking, this book interrogates aspects of our modernity, with its pervasive sense of crisis and uncertainty, and the difficulty of thinking clearly about things like the state and power, data and violence. Reflecting that the US, indeed the North Atlantic countries, seem to have entered autumn, David A. Westbrook asks what spring might be. Will the critical social sciences have anything to offer the exercise of power, or are we doomed to incessant and ineffectual critique? Can bureaucracy be made at least more accountable, if not democratic? Conversely, can we feel less alienated from the structures of power that rule us, or that fail to govern at all? Can we feel at home?
