汚職の比較歴史社会学
Garrido, Marco / Zaloznaya, Marina / Wilson, N. H. (eds.),
A Comparative Historical Sociology of Corruption. (Cambridge Studies in Historical Sociology) 294 pp. 2026:1 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <752-727>
ISBN 978-1-009-66914-6 hard ¥27,483.- (税込) GB£ 95.00
This volume renews the study of corruption as 'embedded' in ongoing social relations. Instead of treating corruption as a universal phenomenon, A Comparative Historical Sociology of Corruption shows how corruption is often morally ambiguous and deeply intertwined with the social, political and economic struggles of particular groups in specific times and places. Ranging from Early Modernity to the present day, and spanning across the globe, the book focuses on three recurring aspects of corruption: emergence or the origins and struggles over whether something is corrupt; institutionalization or how different definitions of corruption predominate; and mobilization or the sociopolitical functions that different definitions of corruption serve in times of social change. The volume includes a wide variety of historical and contemporary studies to show that corruption is embedded in its context, providing a novel framework for readers to understand how and why corruption persists across time and place.

East Asia and the Modern International Order: From Imperialism to the Cold War. 384 pp. 2025:11 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <752-728>
ISBN 978-1-009-54520-4 hard ¥26,037.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
ISBN 978-1-009-54517-4 paper ¥8,100.- (税込) GB£ 28.00
This crucial interdisciplinary work brings together historians and international relations specialists to re-examine fourteen events in twentieth-century East Asia that shaped world and regional politics. In a series of case studies framed by conceptual essays the authors examine key moments and their wider significance, including the Chinese Exclusion Acts in the United States; the Japanese racial equality proposal at the Versailles conference of 1919; anti-colonial movements in Southeast Asia before 1945; and the changing nature of sovereignty in the Pacific Islands. The authors decenter the Cold War in Asia away from American and European perspectives and examine how countries in the region positioned themselves given distinctive domestic coalitions. These historical examples demonstrate the unique East Asian experience of war, empire, and political independeence, shedding valuable light on contemporary international relations and the challenges faced in Asia-Pacific today.

Ho, Elaine Lynn-Ee / Salazar Parrenas, Rhacel et al. (eds.),
Migration and Citizenship pathways in/beyond Asia. (Ethnic and Racial Studies) 184 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK) <752-732>
ISBN 978-1-041-11960-9 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This edited volume explores the complex and varied pathways to citizenship that migrants navigate in both sending and receiving countries. By examining the diverse strategies which migrants employ to handle uncertainties and global disparities, this work highlights how citizenship pathways evolve across national and transnational spaces, as well as over time. Citizenship pathways are defined as the routes and processes through which migrants achieve citizenship recognition and redistribution, influencing their pursuit of personal and family goals. This approach reveals how different migrant groups experience membership and access economic opportunities, with some gaining political and social rights while others face denial. Additionally, migrants' responses to policy changes and their adaptive strategies reshape citizenship practices. This volume underscores the dynamic interplay between migration and citizenship, illustrating how power relations among states, migrants, and non-migrants are continuously renegotiated, affecting societal structures and individual life choices. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Why are liberation and independence movements often betrayed when their leaders get into government? This question has haunted Peter Hain for decades. A lifelong activist and politician, Hain has over 50 years' experience of battling corruption, from his early days as a freedom fighter against apartheid to his time as a UK Labour MP, cabinet minister, and sitting member of the House of Lords. He offers a gripping exploration of why movements born from the ideals of justice and freedom often succumb to bad governance and corruption once in power. Combining rigorous analysis with well-sourced evidence, this book examines global examples ranging from Africa to Latin America, Russia, the Caribbean, China and India. With the unique perspective of having navigated both the streets of protest and the corridors of power, Hain reflects on the challenges of staying true to the values of liberation struggles while confronting their disappointing outcomes. Thought-provoking and accessible, this book is an essential read for anyone engaged in the fight for a better world.

中国の垂直的多国間主義とグローバル・サウス
Mierzejewski, Dominik / Jura, J. / Kowalski, B. et al.,
China's Vertical Multilateralism and the Global South: Narratives, Networks, and Money. (Routledge Studies on Think Asia) 264 pp. 2025:10 (Routledge, UK) <752-687>
ISBN 978-1-041-08280-4 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book provides an in-depth analysis of China-led multilateralism and decodes China's narratives, and political and business practices, both from theoretical and practical dimensions.Introducing the mechanisms that govern China-led multilateral formats in what China sees as the Global South, the study offers a comparative analysis and checks whether China uses a one-size-fits-all strategy towards the selected case study formats and adopts a more differentiated regional approach. The case studies cover the following China-led multilateral formats: China-ASEAN, Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), China-Central and Eastern Europe, and China-CELAC. The authors introduce four primary practices of China's management of relations within these platforms: executing discursive power, cultivating elite diplomacy, influencing public opinion, and navigating economic interactions to illustrate the bilateral and informal nature of China-led multilateralism practices. They argue that the bilateral approach is driven by China's will to keep its paramount position within the formats and its pursuit to exploit the divisions among countries in these formats. Moreover, China's relations with the Global South community are governed by informal networks that give the impression of non-interference and position China as the principal power due to these relationships' inherent asymmetry. Cognizant of bilateral and informal drivers of China's multilateral practices, the book compares China's relations with selected case studies of countries under the multilateral umbrella: Brazil, Cambodia, Chile, Kenya, Poland, Serbia, South Africa, and Thailand. It considers the growing tensions between China and the West surrounding the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, the centralisation of power in China, and the Russian war in Ukraine.Shedding light on China's policies and practices on bilateral and multilateral levels, this book will be of interest to researchers studying International Relations, Asian Politics, the politics of the Global South and Chinese Studies.

北東アジアにおけるナショナリストの企業家と領土紛争-公益を維持する
Bang, Jiun,
Nationalist Entrepreneurs and Territorial Disputes in Northeast Asia: Sustaining Public Interest. (Rethinking Asia and International Relations) 182 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK) <752-703>
ISBN 978-1-041-09849-2 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book explores how nationalism surrounding territorial sovereignty requires a domestic nationalist ecosystem, aka the Nationalist Industrial Complex, to sustain public interest. It focusses on nationalist entrepreneurs representing local merchants who commodify nationalism by building businesses that explicitly incorporate elements of territorial sovereignty protection e.g. food and apparel with the insignia of a disputed territory. The author argues that this 'mundane' everyday activity of commodification co-constitutes public interest surrounding territorial sovereignty and explains why nationalism might be more contingent than permanent. Despite its prevalence the commodification of nationalism is one of the most under-explored areas. This fresh insight on how everyday nationalism can influence ordinary people's understanding of or attention to nationalistic issues will be of interest to scholars and students of East Asian international relations, nationalism, security studies, area studies and comparative politics.

Helou, Joseph P. / Polese, Abel (eds.),
Informal Governance and Crisis: How Invisible, Everyday Tactics of Survival Affect, Reshape and Redesign Policymaking and Governance. (ThirdWorlds) 146 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK) <752-154>
ISBN 978-1-041-08656-7 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
This book examines the impact of crises on people's lives by walking readers through several case studies from Mali, Niger, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil, Lebanon, Libya and several escape routes and entry points, such as the Canary Islands, into the European Union. It conceptualizes crises as events that disrupt political, social and economic orders, thus breeding ad hoc people-led solutions. These informal people-led coping strategies re-define existing social systems, challenge political orders and transcend the pre-existing economic conventions. The book shows how an increase in the volume and scope of informal practices, in addition to the repetition of these practices over time, culminate in the rise of new modes of governance. It reveals that these new governance dynamics can supplant the state, defy state rules and/or complement state capacities. The analyses and reflections in this book provide policy makers with valuable insights to deal with governance in post-crises situations, while recognizing the role of informality in this process. This book is intended for students, researchers and scholars of migration studies, political science, and international relations. It also offers valuable perspectives for policymakers and practitioners working in the fields of governance, crisis management, and social development. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

開発のディスコースとグローバル・ヒストリー-植民地主義から持続可能な開発目標まで 第2版
Ziai, Aram,
Development Discourse and Global History: From Colonialism to the Sustainable Development Goals. 2nd ed. (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) 324 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK) <752-156>
ISBN 978-1-032-69157-2 hard ¥41,948.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
ISBN 978-1-032-69162-6 paper ¥11,568.- (税込) GB£ 39.99
Development Discourse and Global History introduces readers to the shifting ways in which people have been talking and writing about 'development' over time, and the rules governing the conversation.Drawing on the methods of Michel Foucault, Ziai's ground-breaking book traces the origins of development discourse back to late colonialism and notes the significant discontinuities that led to the establishment of a new discourse and its accompanying industry. This book goes on to describe the contestations, appropriations, and transformations of the concept over time. It shows that trends which have emerged since the 1980s, such as an emphasis on participation and ownership, sustainable development, and free markets, are incompatible with the original rules, and so lead to serious contradictions. The Eurocentric, authoritarian and depoliticizing elements in development discourse are uncovered, whilst still recognizing its progressive appropriations. This new edition includes revisions throughout, and an important new chapter on race and racism, as well as a discussion of the evolution of the Sustainable Development Goals. This book is perfect for students and researchers in development studies, global history and discourse analysis as well as an interdisciplinary audience from international relations, political science, sociology, geography, anthropology, language and literary studies.
