Neo-Fascism and the Far Right in Brazil. (Elements in the History and Politics of Fascism) 75 pp. 2025:3 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <744-981>

Is there a history of neo-fascism in Brazil? The purpose of this Element is to analyze neo-fascism as a late phenomenon to understand its impacts and its connections with the so-called new rights, the radical right, as well as Bolsonarism. For this purpose, this Element is separated in three sections, addressing the formation of the first neo-fascist organizations after the Brazilian democratic transition; the development and articulation of a transnational network amidst a sharpening political crisis; and the emergence of a more complex and active Brazilian framework in the global extreme-right scenario in recent years. The main argument is that, despite being a late phenomenon, neo-fascism managed to articulate itself and have a political impact in Brazil, therefore eliciting further investigation to understand its complexity and diversity.

A Companion to Latin American Photography. (Tamesis Companions) 272 pp. 2025:6 (Tamesis, UK) <744-985>
ISBN 978-1-85566-385-5 hard ¥24,310.- (税込) GB£ 85.00
How can photography enrich our knowledge of Latin America? Photography provides unique insights into Latin America. It acts as a witness, agent, and archive - containing a wealth of knowledge about the continent, its social classes, and its multiple ethnicities. This companion introduces the reader to the role that photography plays in Latin America, offers ways in which it can be studied, and reveals how this medium can promote a deeper awareness of the region. It reviews the history of photography in Latin America; ways in which the technology transmits distinctive information; the influence of specific photographers and their relationships with patrons, mentors, and students; the role of institutions in promoting photography; and the developing Latin American canon. The Companion to Latin American Photography also explores how the medium can shape Latin American narratives and cultural identities; assert or question power; serve as testimony and memory; and represent and empower women, children and youth, as well as marginalized groups such as the disappeared. The study is intended not only to provide an overview of Latin American photography (including dozens of images from a vast array of photographers over the past two centuries), it also discusses innovative work taking place there. Above all, this book can be viewed as a guide to the ways in which photography can enhance and expand a viewer's knowledge of Latin America.

This book presents a historical synthesis of colonial relations between Brazil and Portugal, illuminating the projects that the statesmen of the period formulated for the rich Portuguese territory in America-at first as a colonial domain, then as a potential independent country.Drawing on primary sources and historiographical dialogues with classic and current works, the book follows a chronological thread from Marquis of Pombal's reforms to Brazilian independence. The work is framed by global geopolitics at the height of the liberal revolutions that led to the collapse of the Ancient Regime and the colonial system. Liberal revolutions, the Atlantic context, Napoleonic wars, and disputes for hegemony on the South American continent provide further background to the making of the Portuguese-American slaveholding class, the guarantor of the independence process. While the volume focuses on a remote period of history, its analysis of agendas for the nation offers the opportunity for dialogue with current concerns in Brazil.Shaping Brazil is an effective resource for understanding a long and seminal period of Brazil's history, which will be of value to scholars of Brazilian history and Latin American history and studies more widely.

26 Years a Slave: Juan Miranda and Other "Spanish Negroes" in Colonial New York. (Caribbean Series 42) 403 pp. 2025:7 (Brill, NE) <744-988>
ISBN 978-90-04-73376-3 hard ¥29,735.- (税込) EUR 124.00
26 Years a Slave represents the inaugural book-length study of the little-known "Spanish Negroes," or non-white Spanish-speaking sailors enslaved in colonial North America. Bringing to light their history of slavery and resistance, the book tells the incredible story of the free-born Juan Miranda. Enslaved in New York, Miranda fights an arduous legal battle to win his freedom. His attorney, William Kempe, makes a strong case for his rights and against slavery based on skin color. This well-illustrated account touches on legal history, the War of Jenkins' Ear, and the so-called "Slave Plot" of 1741. 26 Years a Slave is not just a translation of the critically acclaimed publication 26 anos de esclavitud but a revised enriched version, containing a selection of additional study cases. The original Spanish edition of this book received the following awards: Willi Paul Adams Award, Organization of American Historians, Bloomington, Indiana, USA (2023) Best Academic Themed Book, The 24th International Latino Book Awards, Gold medal, Los Angeles, USA (2022) The Victor Villasenor Best Latino Focused Nonfiction Book Award - Spanish or Bilingua, The 24th International Latino Book Awards, Silver medal, Los Angeles, USA (2022) Best Biography - Spanish or Bilingual, The 24th International Latino Book Awards, Silver medal, Los Angeles, USA (2022)

Reimagining Radical Democracy in the Global South: Emerging Paradigms from Colombia and Tuerkiye. (Elements in Comparative Political Theory) 78 pp. 2025:1 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <744-931>
ISBN 978-1-009-49850-0 hard ¥15,730.- (税込) GB£ 55.00 *
ISBN 978-1-009-49852-4 paper ¥5,148.- (税込) GB£ 18.00 *
Radical democracy informs contemporary social movements both as critique of existing liberal democratic social orders and as inspiration for collective action to challenge power structures. However, existing approaches on the relationship between radical democracy and social movements often truncate complex socio-political issues, constraining political imagination and stifling 'truly radical' alternatives. This Element offers an analysis of contemporary social movements in Colombia and Turkey to show the limits and potential of radical democracy to reimagine new expressions of citizenship and non-capitalist alternatives. It argues that there is a mismatch between the radical democratic paradigm as it is formulated within Eurocentric purview, and the ways it has been articulated and practised by anti-austerity and pro-democracy movements of the twenty-first century. We propose that radical democracy should be rethought in light of novel forms of political activism and visions emerging from these social movements as a response to the failures of liberal democracy.

Transitional Justice Archives: Documenting Human Rights Violations in Latin America. (Routledge Research in Human Rights Law) 192 pp. 2025:6 (Routledge, UK) <744-567>
ISBN 978-1-041-00339-7 hard ¥41,470.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *
Latin America has amassed comprehensive expertise in generating, managing, and providing access to archives documenting widespread human rights violations. This book explores and traces the multiple pathways that led to the creation and production of transitional justice archives in selected Latin American countries. Examining how transitional justice mechanisms have gathered and organised evidence by way of comparing traditional methods used in previous cases with the innovations introduced by digital technologies, the work also shows that the methods used to produce and create transitional justice archives will significantly affect their future utilisation.Presenting the viewpoints of archivists, scholars, and professionals engaged in truth commissions and trials, it incorporates perspectives from diverse fields such as law, human rights, archival studies, history, anthropology, and criminology. The volume is divided into two parts. The first focuses on case studies from Argentina, Chile and Peru. Argentina and Chile have played a leading role in the development, management, and accessibility of extensive records documenting human rights abuses that occurred during the dictatorships in both countries. In the second part, academics and professionals of the Integrated System for Peace, Colombia's most recent transitional justice framework, discuss current challenges and developments in building the archives of the ongoing transitional justice process. This book will be of significant interest to researchers and academics of transitional justice and human rights, as well as archivists and historians specialising in human rights.

For over four decades, drug trafficking gangs have monopolized violence and engaged in various forms of governance across hundreds of informal neighborhoods known as favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork, over 200 interviews with gang members and residents, 400 archival documents, and 20,000 anonymous hotline denunciations of gang members, this book provides a comprehensive examination of the causes and consequences of these governance arrangements. The book documents the variation in gang-resident relationships - from responsive relations in which gangs provide a reliable form of order and stimulate the local economy, to coercive and unresponsive relations in which gangs offers residents few benefits - then identifies the factors that account for this variation. The result is an unprecedented ethnographic study that provides readers a unique, in-depth insight into the evolution of Rio de Janeiro's drug trafficking gangs from their emergence in the 1970s to the present day.

Corruption and the Voter's Decision: Experimental Evidence from Brazil. (Elements in Law, Economics and Politics) 75 pp. 2025:3 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <744-287>
ISBN 978-1-009-49974-3 hard ¥15,730.- (税込) GB£ 55.00 *

Despite voters' distaste for corruption, corrupt politicians frequently get reelected. This Element provides a framework for understanding when corrupt politicians are reelected. One unexplored source of electoral accountability is court rulings on candidate malfeasance, which are increasingly determining politicians' electoral prospects. The findings suggest that (1) low-income voters - in contrast to higher-income voters - are responsive to such rulings. Unlike earlier studies, we explore multiple trade-offs voters weigh when confronting corrupt candidates, including the candidate's party, policy positions, and personal attributes. The results also surprisingly show (2) low-income voters, like higher-income voters, weigh corruption allegations and policy positions similarly, and are slightly more responsive to candidate attributes. Moreover, irrespective of voter income, (3) party labels insulate candidates from corruption, and (4) candidate attributes like gender have little effect. The results have implications for when voters punish corrupt politicians, the success of anti-corruption campaigns, and the design and legitimacy of electoral institutions.

Ancient Maya Economies. (Elements in Ancient and Pre-modern Economies) 78 pp. 2024:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <744-362>
ISBN 978-1-009-51726-3 hard ¥15,730.- (税込) GB£ 55.00 *

Ancient Maya Economies synthesizes the state of the art across seven components: geographical and historical background, ritual economy, households, specialization, exchange, political economies, and future directions. Other Elements case studies use many of the same components, making it easy to compare and contrast ancient Maya economies with systems of production and consumption in other parts of the world. The time is right for this Elements case because knowledge of ancient Maya economies has undergone a revolution in the last few decades, resulting in a complex panorama of new economic information. Aerial laser scanning has revealed higher amounts of intensive agriculture and research on the ground has turned up better evidence for marketplaces. Maya economies feature specialized production, trade of both bulk goods and luxury goods, close integration with ritual and religion, and a carnival parade of political economies.

Jewish Immigrants, Nationalism and Finance Sourcing in Argentina: Otherness and Industrial Entrepreneurship. (Jewish Latin America 18) 205 pp. 2025:6 (Brill, NE) <744-373>
ISBN 978-90-04-73211-7 hard ¥25,898.- (税込) EUR 108.00
"The book represents an innovative and outstanding contribution to the economic, social, and business history of Argentina. It focuses on the factors that conditioned the emergence and development, between 1930 and the early 1960s, of large industrial enterprises founded by Jewish immigrants, with emphasis on the absence of community financial institutions to support their creation and expansion. lt is characterized both by the relevance of the issues it addresses and by the author's ability to conduct original and solid research based on a non-dogmatic conceptual framework, on the analysis of a wide variety of unexplored sources, and the virtuous combination of different scales of observation." The Years of the Infidels: African Latin Christianity from the Vandals to the Almohads. 312 pp. 2025:6 (Routledge, UK) <744-132>
ISBN 978-1-032-54063-4 hard ¥38,610.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
This book examines African Latin Christianity from the fifth to the thirteenth century, exploring the complex interactions between local Christian communities and Vandals, Byzantines, and Arabs.Focusing on the resilience of successive generations of African Christians and their capacity to adapt to challenging political circumstances, Marco Cristini delves into their relationships with local rulers, popes, and European sovereigns such as Charlemagne. He argues that the history of Augustine's heirs represents a crucial phase in the transformation of the Mediterranean's religious landscape during Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. This book offers readers fresh insights into much-debated topics, including the role of religious otherness under the Vandals, Justinian's religious policies, Christian-Muslim relations, and the impact of Western medieval missionaries on indigenous Christian communities. It also sheds light on the remarkable longevity of African Latin Christianity, demonstrating its ability to not only survive but also thrive under 'heretical' or 'infidel' rulers for nearly eight centuries. With its accessible, in-depth, and comprehensive analysis, this book is an essential resource for scholars, postgraduates, and undergraduates interested in Late Antiquity, the Early Middle Ages, the history of North Africa, pre-modern Christianity, early Islam, and the Crusades.
