ISBN 978-1-80374-745-3 paper ¥18,884.- (税込) SFR 74.00

This book discusses various dimensions of the philosophical problems posed by the conception of identity. It looks at philosophical debates centred on ethnic identity, nationalism, and culture, where phenomenological grounding for otherness in Northeast India is extensively studied. It hermeneutically analyses tribal culture, religion, tradition of different ethnic groups that inhabit in Northeast India. The book highlights important issues the tribals here are facing today that are linked to their cultural religion and traditional life. It also examines how humans develop an understanding of themselves vis-a-vis their relationships with others. The philosophical discussion on the concept of tribal as a category of ontology is attempted to offer certain manifested realities on the problems entailed by the question ≪Who is the Other≫? It also discusses nationalism and the search for the other’s otherness as a value signifier of identity, and how each of the different identities has a relative significance in different contexts.

Tausig, Mark / Subedi, Janardan / Ghimire, Saruna (eds.), Population Aging in Societal Context: Evidence from Nepal. (Routledge Contemporary Asia Series) 248 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-367>
ISBN 978-1-041-02343-2 hard ¥41,470.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book offers an explanatory schema for comprehending aging in a societal context, focusing on the case study of Nepal.Contributions to this book use an institutional contextual approach and a life course perspective to document and assess societal responses to the increase in older adults in a given country. This emerging age group entails the development of new and modified social institutions, new and modified cultural norms, and the reallocation of social resources within each country. The study represent an efficient means to understand the status and needs of older adults systematically and to orient policies and programs intended to address the increase in the older population. It can be applied to other countries grappling with similar challenges of rapid population aging and significant social change.A pioneering effort in understanding aging as a social process embedded in social, economic, cultural, and life course contexts, this book fills a gap in Asian Studies, Social Policy and Population Studies.

Islam, Rafiq / Rahman, AHM Mustafizur et al. (eds.), Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation to Improve Food Security in South Asia. 368 pp. 2025:6 (CRC Pr., US) <746-298>
ISBN 978-1-032-62849-3 hard ¥37,180.- (税込) GB£ 130.00 *

Both food security and agriculture contribute to, and are affected by, global climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that food production systems account for up to 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, these systems are increasingly vulnerable to climate change, with extreme weather events such as rising temperatures, flooding, drought, secondary salinity, and land degradation threatening food security in South Asia. Additionally, the spread of weeds, pests, and diseases due to shifting climates exacerbates these challenges. The strain on agriculture and food security from accelerated climate change is further worsening by rapid population growth. Globally, more than 820 million people suffer from hunger, and by 2050, food production will need to double to meet global demands. This intensification of farming, combined with climate change, will lead to greater reliance on reactive chemicals, water, and energy inputs-potentially damaging agroecosystem services and becoming increasingly difficult to manage. South Asia, with its high population growth, is particularly vulnerable to climate impacts such as flooding, salinity, droughts, and solar dimming. Rising sea levels and coastal erosion could result in the loss of 17% of land surface and 30% of food production by 2050.Agriculture and food systems must undergo innovative transformations to address these challenges. A comprehensive Climate Change Adaption Framework is essential for fostering a supportive policy environment, sharing information on climate impacts, and adapting climate-smart agriculture to enhance food security in South Asia. This book, based on the outcomes of the 2022 International Conference on Climate Change and Food security in South Asia, held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, explores key challenges and innovative solutions for mitigating and adapting to the impact of climate change on food security.

ISBN 978-1-009-58231-5 paper ¥6,860.- (税込) GB£ 23.99

In the context of a developing country such as India and of the global commitment to limit the temperature rise, this book provides a comprehensive and novel approach on framing the low carbon development pathways. Data plays a critical role in accurate assessment so it gives a stepwise detail on reconciling national accounting statistics with energy balance data. Further, it explains the setting up of technology optimization and economy-wide macroeconomic framing models. These models have limitations when used in isolation so the book further elaborates on the soft coupling process to overcome the limitations of using individual models. Detailed examples using case studies illustrate the application of structured approach to determine net zero pathways and business decarbonisation scenarios. Future applications for important development questions related to net zero analysis are also enumerated.

Hegewald, Julia A. B. (ed.), Jaina Culture in Medieval Karnataka: Dominance, Dependency and Endurance. (Dependency and Slavery Studies 18) 800 pp. 2025:5 (de Gruyter, GW) <746-1068>
ISBN 978-3-11-168568-7 hard ¥28,763.- (税込) EUR 119.95 *

Why did the Jainas in Karnataka plunge from a position of supremacy into one of severe dependency? After a steep and steady rise throughout the region from about the fifth century CE, Jaina influence waned dramatically from the late eleventh or early twelfth centuries onwards. In this publication, specialists in Indian history, religious studies and anthropology, as well as historians of art and architecture, discuss various expressions of this sudden and detrimental decline and explore the reasons for it, focusing in particular on the relations of the Jainas with V?ra?aivas and Muslims. The evidence provided by the five international scholars, who offer insights from different disciplinal backgrounds, indicates that the reasons for the Jainas’ loss of authority in the region were manifold. Certain internal triggers, such as changes in Jaina social structure and religious practices, adversely affected their position over time. In particular, however, the withdrawal of royal patronage, the success of the V?ra?aivas as traders, and the emergence in the area at this time of a number of competing religious groups caused the Jainas to slip into a position of strong asymmetrical dependency.

Joshi, Girija, Resilient Communities: Household, State, and Ecology in Southern Panjab, c.1750-1900. 343 pp. 2025:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <746-1071>
ISBN 978-1-009-51251-0 hard ¥25,740.- (税込) GB£ 90.00

This book offers a historical perspective on the relationship between community, subsistence, and governance in north-western India. Focusing on Panjab, it explores the continuities in kinship and caste practices of rural Panjabi populations from the mid-eighteenth to late nineteenth centuries. Working from the household outwards, it studies how agropastoral lineages formed, and how some of these managed during the eighteenth century to establish autonomous states or riyasats of their own. From the early nineteenth century onwards, this riyasati order was systematically dismantled by the colonial state. Nevertheless, this book suggests that colonial attempts to settle and reform rural society, by changing both its relationship to the environment and by imposing new definitions of 'community' upon it were met with uneven success. Colonial subjects in rural Panjab continued to forge bonds of kinship beyond the legal limits imposed by the state.

ISBN 978-1-041-00258-1 hard ¥41,470.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

The book studies the challenges faced by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the first two and a half decades after Indian independence. It looks at the shifts in Government policies, how ASI found its feet in a global environment, and the new realities of economic development such as big dam constructions that invariably resulted in the submergence of archaeological sites. Based on unpublished archival data, this book highlights the contributions of the longest-serving Director-General Amalananda Ghosh and members of his staff. It thus provides a corrective to the histories of archaeology that describe the policies of the post-1947 Archaeological Survey of India as a continuation of colonial archaeologists such as Mortimer Wheeler, who was appointed Director-General at the cusp of Indian independence in 1944 by the British. The book will be indispensable to researchers and scholars of history, heritage studies and archaeology, and South Asian studies. It will also be of appeal to those interested in the history of archaeology and the development of the discipline in India

ISBN 978-1-032-95558-2 hard ¥41,470.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book focuses on the cinema of the 1950s in India and analyses the work of seven filmmakers from mainstream Hindi cinema and how they responded to the independent Indian nation after 1947.The selection of key filmmakers instead of cinema in general shows individual trajectories within cinema. The book examines the change in preoccupations or representations in the work of a single filmmaker, followed by an interpretation about the meaning of those representations. The filmmakers were very prolific and their work was commercially successful. Each chapter studies five or six selected films of each filmmaker and also include some relevant biographical details. The book demonstrates that each filmmaker uses their own strategies to address independent India of the 1950s and how Hindu cinema interrogated the nation-state.A novel contribution to Indian cinema, especially Hindi cinema, during formative years of the 1950s, this book will be of interest to researchers in Film Studies, Gender Studies, Political Science and History, as well as South Asian society and culture.

Challenging simplistic narratives, it unveils the nuanced reality of Deoband Islam, revealing a diverse range of perspectives within the movement. It illuminates the movement's historical, social, and philosophical dimensions. Varman, Rohit / Poruthiyil, Prabhir Vishnu (eds.), Fascism and Corporations in 'New' India. 312 pp. 2025:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <746-1082>
ISBN 978-1-009-60555-7 hard ¥25,740.- (税込) GB£ 90.00

This volume examines how the rise of Hindutva to power is linked to the interests of large corporations in neoliberal India. It interprets Hindutva as a fascist force and as a capitalist counter-revolution wearing a popular mask that demands a repressive imposition of order to facilitate accumulation. The book delves into different aspects of the relationship between Hindutva and large corporations. Various chapters cast in high relief how the fascist shields of religion and nationalism are deployed to further corporate profiteering. This book is also a reminder that fascism has inherent limitations and is incapable of resolving crises that give rise to it. However, its ascendance, albeit temporary, is causing widespread destruction. The volume argues that fascist destruction in contemporary India can only be effectively restricted by containing the ravages of neoliberalism and corporate loot.

Sociopolitical Movements of a Century in Tamil Nadu spans a century of sociopolitical struggles-protests, rebellions, agitations, revolutions, and movements-that took place in Tamil Nadu from 1921 to 2020. In an attempt to unearth the historical truths buried by the dominant ideologies, Dr Suba. Veerapandian has employed a sagacious combination of the subaltern and postmodern approaches to history in analysing the struggles to uplift the socially, linguistically, culturally and politically marginalized people of Tamil Nadu. Subavee's subtlety laced with sarcasm engrosses the readers, making the book a gripping narrative of the sociopolitical history of Tamil Nadu. The book celebrates the rich heritage of resistance put forth by leaders such as Periyar EVR, Arignar Anna and Kalaignar Karunanidhi to anarchy and oppression, and links the past to the present, censuring the sociopolitical ideologies that trample societies through cultural hegemony.

Likewise, in the wake of wider conversations on bringing diversity to the academic disciplines, this volume on Periyar will draw attention to a non-canonical thinker whose important intellectual and political contributions transcend the limits of his context. The volume brings together established academics in the field as well as early career researchers to provide the first of its kind companion to Periyar. Tapping new sources, challenging myths, and crossing disciplinary boundaries, this volume presents a Periyar for the times.

It seeks to inform policy and build a bridge between policy and practice. Why did China intrude along the disputed border with India in May 2020? This question has baffled governments, policy makers, scholars and analysts across the globe. 北山修他著 日本とインドにおけるプライマルな関係性への精神分析的考察
Kitayama, Osamu / Basak, Jhuma, Psychoanalytic Explorations into the Primal Relationship in Japan and India. (Psychoanalysis and Women Series) 280 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1035>
ISBN 978-1-032-81901-3 hard ¥40,040.- (税込) GB£ 140.00
ISBN 978-1-032-75204-4 paper ¥9,148.- (税込) GB£ 31.99

In this landmark collaboration, Osamu Kitayama and Jhuma Basak chronical their long-standing collaboration and cultural exchange to survey the importance of familial relationships in Japan and India, exploring primal relations through a cross-cultural psychoanalytic lens.Divided into three sections, Psychoanalytic Explorations into the Primal Relationship in Japan and India looks at each country's perception of parenthood and approach to raising children in turn before concluding in an illuminating dialogue between the two authors. Kitayama explores the maternal figure within the mother-child relationship, with a focus on the mother-son dyad, as well as relationships between parents. He considers, in depth, how Japanese culture can often exclude what is perceived as alien, delving into its rich tapestry of folklore to understand underlying 'mental scripts' which can shape collective perceptions, societal norms and expectations, each of which can pose an issue to healthy familial relationships. Basak's response draws from Indian socio-cultural and mythological contexts, as well as clinical applications, to provide psychoanalytic insight into the stark differences and similarities between attitudes in Japan, India and the eastern culture at large. Both authors join together to highlight different child rearing practises such as co-sleeping and how they can shape human sexuality-subjectivity. Challenging the standardisation of the Oedipal myth, the book draws from literary and clinical examples in Japan and India to invite the reader into another world of parenting style and another idiom of psychoanalysis. Uniquely positioned to develop understanding of how psychoanalysis has developed in non-Western countries, this book is an essential resource for psychoanalysts in training and in practice.

Weil, Simone / Bommarito, Nic (ed.), Dharma and Detachment: Writings on Indian and Tibetan Thought. 192 pp. 2025:9 (Routledge, UK) <746-1051>
ISBN 978-1-032-91081-9 hard ¥41,470.- (税込) GB£ 145.00
ISBN 978-1-032-91083-3 paper ¥11,436.- (税込) GB£ 39.99

Simone Weil was one of the most profound and thought-provoking thinkers of the twentieth century. An intellectual prodigy from an early age in both the sciences and the arts, she was at different times a teacher, factory and farm labourer, and political activist, spending a brief period in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Her writings, which span philosophy, politics, religion and spirituality, are marked by a both passionate and contemplative attempt to understand profound questions about the good, God, human thought and action, and suffering and beauty. However, considerably less known is Weil's fascination with the texts and ideas of Indian and Tibetan thought, which she both thought and wrote about extensively. Dharma and Detachment: Writings on Indian and Tibetan Thought is the first volume to draw together some of Weil's most interesting and important writings on eastern thought.Expertly edited and introduced by Nicolas Bommarito, the anthology contains writings drawn from Weil's extensive Notebooks. The extracts show how she moves seamlessly between Plato, Catholicism, mathematics, the Bhagavad-Gita, and Buddhism, engaging with texts in the original Sanskrit. To help the reader gain a full insight into Weil's thought, the volume also includes - along with Weil's own writings - key passages from the classical texts that inspired her, especially the Bhagavad-Gita and the Upanisoads. In addition to a helpful Introduction by Nicolas Bommarito setting out the background to Weil's life and her engagement with Indo-Tibetan texts, he also explains fundamental Indo-Tibetan philosophical terms such as atman, the three gunoas, karma and detachment. A glossary is also included, making the volume an ideal starting point for those unfamiliar with Indo-Tibetan philosophy and seeking a clear path into Weil's engagement with these texts and ideas.Dharma and Detachment: Writings on Indian and Tibetan Thought will be of great interest to all readers and students of Simone Weil's work, as well as to those interested in Indian and Tibetan philosophy, religion, and phenomenology.

植民地期インドにおける知識人と後背地
Boyk, David, Provincial Metropolis: Intellectuals and the Hinterland in Colonial India. 240 pp. 2025:8 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <746-1064>
ISBN 978-1-009-51083-7 hard ¥25,740.- (税込) GB£ 90.00

This book tells the story of the city of Patna, in the north Indian region of Bihar, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A century and more earlier, Patna had been an important and populous city, but it had come to be seen by many-and is still seen today-as merely part of the mofussil, the provincial hinterland. But despite the city's real decline, it continued to nurture a vibrant and cosmopolitan intellectual culture that linked it with cities and towns across northern India and beyond. Urdu literary gatherings and other Islamicate traditions inherited from Mughal times helped animate the networks that sustained satirical newspapers and scholarly libraries. Drawing on rich archival research in Urdu, Hindi, and English, Provincial Metropolis shows that Patna's intellectual and cultural life thrived not despite its provinciality but because of it.

Das Gupta, Sejuti / Chakraborty, S. / Banerjee, T. (eds.), Contradictions of Democracy, Development and Inequality: A Case of India. 260 pp. 2025:7 (Routledge, UK) <746-1065>
ISBN 978-1-032-29188-8 hard ¥41,470.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

Identity politics has widened representation for the marginalised groups in democracies, while neoliberalism has deepened inequality. This volume finds answers to the paradox of widening representation and worsening inequality especially in India exploring the themes of development and identity in recent times. Inspired by Ceasar Basu's works as a political thinker and teacher, this volume weaves in economic concerns with the socio-cultural aspects of identity and contends that representation is not sufficient. Further, it highlights the importance of reinstating redistribution to serve both democracy and development. It looks at neoliberal policies and how they maximise negative liberty by focussing on the individual thereby obliterating the question of the social location of individuals. The contributors to this volume investigate these issues through the lens of religion, gender, caste, and raise interdisciplinary questions concerning ecological conditions of labour, the institution of democracy and capitalist regimes, linkages among multiple sectors of the Indian economy, devaluation of women's work in the care economy, material distribution of resources, and liberty and civil rights. This book creates a much-needed conversation between the study of development through the economic perspective and the cultural or political sociology perspective. It will be of interest to students and researchers of politics especially identity politics, economics, sociology and social justice, development studies, and social geography.
